Care for ceramic hob?

Hi all,

I have today taken delivery of my first ever 'brand new' cooker!

Eeeek, so exited! I cooked two yummy casseroles in it earlier.

It is the type with a ceramic hob, and I have no idea how to care for it- clean it/prevent scratches etc.

Please can anyone advise how best to go about keeping it looking sparkly and new?

Many thanks

  • I think the main thing is don't ever drag your pans across the surface, always lift them up or you'll get scratches you'll regret.
Clean up any marks and spillages as soon as they happen so as to not let them get burnt on and thats half the problem dealt with.
I always found prevention was better than cure and not letting the hob get dirty in the first place was the best approach.
Much better to clean every time you use with a quick wipe over than spend ages trying not to damage your hob getting rid of burnt on marks at a later date.
The best thing I found for cleaning ceramic hobs was Bar Keepers Friend,it always got rid of any stubborn stains, most supermarkets stock it for under £2 and it lasts ages.
Just don't use anything abrasive, not ever.
Apart from that enjoy your new cooker.

if it's a glass-top one they're not as delicate as everyone thinks, ok still be careful but you can do more to it than you'd think.
I have a razor blade scraper like the kind they use for getting paint graffiti off train windows. I use it once a week to brighten up the cooker because no matter how much you clean the surface, stuff still seems to build up.
my main problem recently has been fear. I have le creuset pans and am soooo worried I'll drop one onto the top of my cooker!

Get over to ebay and get yourself one of these

They are the best thing ever for cleaning off burnt on spills. I use mine on my iron too.

    And some of this

This is better than any cleaner you buy in supermarkets, don't even bother with Hob Brite, it's crap in comparison. You can buy this in Comet, Currys etc. but it's about £8 a bottle.

Use both of the above once a week and you'll have a lovely sparkling hob. For an everyday wipe down I use good old Star Drops or washing up liquid.

And it's true, a ceramic hob isn't as delicate as you think. Although I did break my first two by dropping a bottle of olive oil on the edge, I now have one with a stainless steel edge rather than bevelled glass. not as pretty but much more practical for a butter fingers!
