Job advertisements with no salary listed

Hi guys,

I was just wondering what the ettiquete is concerning job advertisements with no salary listed.

I am interested in a position at a local company but there is no salary listed, I do not want to waste my time applying if it is minimum wage.

Would it be permissable to email the company concerned to ask if they are able to provide me with salary details or is this a no-no?

    You could apply and state your salary requirements & if this is not in their range they prob wont get back to you or you can apply with not expectations and wait till they get back to you (if they do) for an interview and then ask then.
  • Email them using a different name (and email address)

    If the money is right for you then enquire as the real you :)

    Often a company will not list the salary because it is not very competitive! Can you ring up /email and ask for the details - obv you don't have to give your real name and if they won't give the exact salary you can ask if it would meet your requirements as the other poster said.
    I once worked somewhere where the company was bringing in new people on a higher salary than some existing staff (who had mainly been promoted from very low paid entry level roles) so they didn't want to advertise the salary and create a big to-do about it internally, so that could be another reason.

    If the employer doesn't want existing staff to become annoyed because they are not receiving what may be offered to a new recruit, the company will not provide more than a broad salary range (probably just "from £xK") because anyone phoning in or emailing could be using a false name and trying to find out on behalf of the current employees.

    If I received a call from someone asking what the salary was in those circumstances, I would put the question back to the call - "what are you looking for?"

  • The problem with listing a salary or a salary range is that people 95% of the time will ask for the top of that range or just below it because they think you are willing to pay it. The reality can be that a role can have a fairly wide range of possible tasks, the persons skills/ experience will dictate the tasks they get and thus the money they get. The last perm Project Manager I tried to hire we were offering £30,000 to £50,000 salary because could have taken someone who had strong MS Office skills and a light amount of experience who would require a lot of hand holding or take someone with a good number of years of the job who could work autonomously from day 1. There was only 1 applicant that requested less than £45,000 and plenty who asked for £50k that had no project experience and their CV stated their Key Achievements as organising travel and booking meetings.

    Of cause it can also be that you may be willing to stretch your budget if you found a star candidate who would otherwise have been put off applying because of salary being too low.
