    Wow!! I love your button roof, and the icing sugar! I did my first gingerbread house last year and cant wait to do this years, where is your kit from?

    Mine was a dr. Oetker 1.99 job!! lol, but took hours and hours of christmassy fun!!

    Im doing 2 this year, one for me and one for the family I gave this one to...

    Its not the best pic, its a screen shot from some video I took of it whilst I was making it, I taped the whole thing, I think its about 6 hours long! heeheehee

    I didn't use a kit, it was just a gingerbread recipe, i downloaded and printed the template and then cut it out of an old cardboard box.
    The decorations on the house were just what i found in Tesco when i went for my ingredients...and the buttons/smarties were half price :D
    It looks brilliant, well done.

    I made my first gingerbread house last year and you've inspired me to do a button roof this year - and I love the star shaped trees. It is hard to see it get destroyed but at least people enjoy it - if I lived in the UK, I would make one for my nephew and friends kids as presents too. Which gingerbread recipe did you use? The one I used last year was really hard so was looking for a slightly softer one.

    I agree, if people enjoy it then its served its purpose, but it still seems a shame to break it, but i think im a little over protective as its the first one ive ever made!
    The recipe i used is this one;

    And i also used the template, however i didn't have any mixed spice so i added a bit extra of each cinnamon and ginger. The gingerbread is solid enough to build a house with, but its still soft enough inside like i always remember my local bakery making their gingerbread men.

    Also i was told it could be more 'gingery' so maybe a dash more ginger next time and to make the scene i made 1 and a half quantity wise from the recipe.

    Punkpink - that house is fab!!! How long does it last for? Would love to make one for my neice and nephew for Christmas but not sure I'll have time on the last couple of days before Christmas

    Also, please could you post your recipe?

    Thanks!

    Recipe above, and i would say it depends where you store it, but as it is all sealed it would take a while to 'go off'.
    If you could make it, then keep it in an air tight container until you create the scene i wouldn't see a problem in keeping it for a week or two.

    And thanks for the piccies, they look great. If anybody has any others to share i would love to see them, its good to see how others decorate them....so much scope for the imagination! :j
  • Those pictures remind me of my son. His birthday is 17th December and for years his "cake" had to be a gingerbread house. One year he saw a picture in a Woman's Weekly for a gingerbread village and had a village instead. It took me hours right on top of Christmas. No more gingerbread houses for him now though as he has decided he doesn't like ginger.

    Your pictures are all lovely and would definitely get me in the Christmas spirit.
