Tights sizing

I was just wondering if someone can help me. I really struggle to find tights that fit (I'm 5ft8 and a size 18-20). I usually find that the top rolls down as I walk, and then they pretty quickly end up round my knees, so I look crazy walking around holding them up permanently until I get somewhere I can take them off. I'm not sure whether I should be buying a size bigger, or a size smaller?
I asked in Debenhams yesterday and they told me that the waist size doesn't change with the tights size and it's just the leg that changes, so I bought a load of pairs, but now I'm thinking that what they said can't be right - how on earth can small and extra large both be expected to be the same waist? Plus, the size on tights themselves say that if you're borderline go for the bigger size.
I don't really want to try the tights on, because if I'm right and they told me a load of rubbish then I can't take them back.
So can someone please explain how tights sizing works and maybe suggest a good (preferably not too expensive) brand?

I have no idea about tights sizing, but for decent cheap-ish larger tights I'd recommend either the golden lady ones from Asda or the own brand ones from the Co-op. I've found that Evans are now useless, they used to be ok but they seem to have taken every bit of elastic out of the tights and made the legs insanely long.0

I am 5 10 and a size 18, I swear by ASDA ex large tights 100+ denier... Hope this helps0

Try Primark, I was really suprised at the quality and price - check the sizing, xl will be fine for you. They fit well and if you like opaques approx 3 for 3 -bargain. I've had to do the knock-kneed walk as well recently so I know where you are coming from!

Boots, tall and fuller figure range are very good and sized well.0

Thanks everyone, I'll try the Debenhams xl ones I got, maybe try the cheaper single pack rather than the dearer three pack, if they don't fit I can take the other four lots back.
I do like Asda ones but they don't have a good range in bright colours. I'll have a look at Primark.
I refuse to buy anything from Boots now, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
If all else fails, wear an extra pair of pants over the top. Not ideal but it works.0

I think it's more the quality of them and the amount of elastic. I would go for the larger size so that the legs aren't too stretched pulling them down and try to pull the tights up really high over a waist band. I know pulling tights up to your ribs isn't always desirable(weirdly for me all tights come up sooooo high some even go to my bra  ) but having a waist band over them helps keep them up.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

Thanks again everyone.
adelight, I find that I can't get them up to my waistband most of the time, hopefully the xl ones will go that high up though. I do have pretty long legs so it's probably good to have the length and see what happens with the waist.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
BHS. This is the only place I buy tights from. The way the size their tights is that if you are short and fat or tall and skinny the tights always seem to fit. I am the same height as you and a size 14 to 16 and they always fit great.0
