Has anybody played The Health Lottery?

Good Morrning

Has anybody played The Health Lottery? Apparently, you have 7 times more chances of winning the big prizes than The National Lottery or Premium Bonds. Tickets start from £1 each.

Perhaps, we could form small groups of 4 or 5 people and try and win something!

afraid the forum rules do not allow you to share personal information

only 20% of the money raised actually goes to the NHS etc , I have concerns that rather than target money directly at their favourite charities people will think they are doing good by playing this

donate directly to your charity and give them 100% of your money

  • Whereas 28% of the National Lottery money goes to 'good' causes, & 70 million quid sits in a bank account for years doing absolutely nothing !!

You have a very low opinion of people's intelligence. Nobody plays the lottery in order to support good causes, they do it for the chance of winning money. Many will say "Oh well, at least some of it went to good causes" when they don't win, just to make them selves feel better. But they didn't buy the ticket to support good causes.

I will, if the chances of them giving me a few £ Million is as good as the lottery's?

If people want to give money to charity they do it, if they want a chance of winning money they buy a lottery ticket, but the two never mix.

Exactly, you play a lottery rather than give to the hospice. You have a choice of giving 100% of the money directly to the hospice or a smaller percentage with the rest going to a lottery where you have a chance of getting something back. And you choose to play the lottery.

Now if you had said "I support the Dove House Hospice by playing their lottery" it may have been different. But you didn't mention supporting the hospice, your first, and only thought was playing the lottery.
  • Actually I do support the hospice primarily. I take part in fundraising events throughout the year, and the lottery just seemed like an extra way of supporting them. I believe that the percentage of the money going to the hospice is pretty hefty.

My first and only thought isn't playing the lottery, it's just the subject of this conversation, so of course I said that it's a lottery first. Actually, I did once win on a scratchcard, and didn't cash it in because I didn't want to take money away from the hospice. So I really wouldn't say that it being a lottery is my first concern at all.

I think it's more about the misconception the name of this lottery gives. The "Health lottery" makes it sound more charitable than it actually is and with only 20% actually going to the NHS and such, it feels like we are being misguided.
