Thank you again for your help Jimmo, have gone back and re-read your original post and it's clear now! Thank you. Was in a rush to thank everyone for replies and I ended up missing the point re the capital gain. It now makes sense as to why the solicitors are pushing for valuations on the property! I've not been furnished with any figures but we are pretty confident that IHT won't be an issue now.

I'm just in a tricky situation - parents are a bit cagey when it comes to family finances, I think they still think I am 12! However, where I have worked for HMRC for 13yrs (not an inspector though!) and I'm AAT qualified they seem to think they can throw snippets of info my way and get a comprehensive answer! I wish I still worked in an office with Inspectors to hand as I could have just popped my head round the door for a quick chat! I'm not a regular poster but I am a lurker :)

Thank you for your reply John! It did make me chuckle :) I like your analogies.

Your earlier point about bad blood - we have contacted Step Grandmothers family. She only had one surving relative, a nephew. I think he may have benfitted from step grans will to an extent but I know the majority was left to Grandad. I know Grandad was fond of him and I think he may also have left him something.

It's all quite early days though. I think Dad is dealing with this by getting his head down and ploughing through the paperwork and worrying himself about figures and coming up with lots of hypothetical questions without actually knowing the exact amounts involved! I guess it's all part of the grief cycle eh? :)
