Anyway, given that we are becoming a rentier society, there will be political pressue on the government to ensure the renter (i.e. their voters) are better protected against the greed and exploitation of rogue landlords.
I own and let some flats in Germany (very cheap properties, I'm not any kind of Lord o the land) and whilst the rules upon me are strict, it works both ways. The rules are similarly strict for my tenants. For example if we carry out most kinds of works (such as recently installing newer bathrooms), we are automatically entiled to an 11% rent rise on every Euro expended.0
