Is anyone else fed up of Plastic bags?

I have been doing some research into plastic and the hazardous effects it has on us, our planet and the species living on it. I mean did you know that bags that get land filled never disintegrate completely if at all and that plastic bags are killing numerous animals both on land and in water? Even the so called bio-degradable bags never fully degrade because they need light and fungi to do this.

Currently many supermarkets are offering incentives to stop using new plastic bags, but they are not banishing them from their stores. The incentives just aren’t big enough and they certainly aren’t back-up enough by government.

So my proposal is lets all get re-usable, natural material shopping bags! Who's with me???

  • I've been telling people I know (friends and family) to carry-a-bag instead of using a new carrier bag - it's something I adopted after reading about it on the https://www.selfsufficientish.com website....

I keep a natural cotton bag in my handbag, but it would be a start if every one even carried a (reused) plastic carrier rather than take a new one.....

Hi, i re use the plastic bags that i have already. Usually try and keep at least a couple in my handbag incase of unexpected purchases too. I'm thinking of getting a trolley bag, but they're a bit grannyish and my kids keep saying I'n not allowed!! I use this against them when I go shopping and tell them they have to come with me to help carry the bags as i can't carry it all myself. Does anyone one know if you can get trolley bags that are a bit trendier than the tartan ones you normally see??

I've also collected several re-usable bags - some from supermarkets and some that have been made for me plus some baskets which are great! I would be without them now.

Jayne - in the argos new catalogue - they have several trolley bags - 1 which is foldable and is in a trendy black/red/white stripe design (the others have some form of tartan on them). Or what about Lakeland Ltd?
  • Argh yes i hate plastic bags. I usually say no, although the other day at the fruit/veg stall i said no to a bag and showed her my own, she proceeded to fill it (no more than a bag's worth), and then stick the brocolli in its own plastic bag to stop it 'shedding' everywhere.

I have a load of reusable shopping bags, which get taken every time we go out to shop.. includes 3 or 4 of Asdas black fabric-y type ones ('Pink Ribbon' / breast cancer charity ones) which are brilliant, about the right size and dont topple over and spill your shopping everywhere.

I also have a thin cotton bag which i keep in my bag all the time - folds up to take up little space and washable :) Bought that one from Infinity Foods in Brighton and shall be buying a couple more next time i'm there.

Carriers from the times i forget to tell em 'no!' get used as bin bags, or stuffed in the recycling bank.

I'm also plagued at work (shop) by a manager telling me to always give the customer a bag - even with tiny things when they have bags already  I ignore him and carry on asking people if they need one - its amazing actually, i'd say about 50% of 'small items' customers i ask say they don't - obviously everyone just takes them through habit/laziness.

I re-use plastic bags to death. Anyway I bought four jute bags from Sainsbury. They are roomy, strong and last forever, so I take one or two of them with me when shopping anywhere. I hardly ever need a plastic bag now.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

THanks Yate girl, not got the new Argos catalogue yet, I'll have to have a wander into town tomorrow:o

I also use my carriers to death and when they're dead:rolleyes: i put them in the recycling box at Tesco.

I have also found that the charity bags that come through the door are a good size to replace balck bin bags if you're not gonna fill them with cahrity stuff:p

  • I have a collection of carrier bags in my bag, plus a few in the case (just incase), whenever I tell a cashier that I don't want a bag they look at me really oddly !!

Thanks JayneC for the tip about charity bags, I usually put them back on the doorstep so atleast they can collect and reuse them, but most of the time they stay there for weeks until I get sick of the sight of it and throw it away.

When I go to the supermarket I prefer to fill a large cardboard box with my shopping. It's far easier to transport. Sadly, one day I'm sure some health and safety idiot will decree that reusing old boxes is dangerous in some way.
    Happy chappy

  • Jayne,
I know there's been loads of discussions about shopping trolleys on the old style forum. You can get really funky ones.
If you search the forum for 'wally trollies' you should find some links.
