got the job but problem?

Hi again I posted the last week asking for opinion on something regarding my application.

I luckily got a phonecall monday afternoon asking me in for an interview which really surprised me as my application was only received monday:D and had an interview today.I was very nervous as have been out of work so long.

Anyway they offered be the job this afternoon and i happily said yes.

Turns out the job is only 15 hours a week and as a single parent i have been told i need 16 hours to get working tax credits. Is this right?

Is there anything I can do?Would it be cheeky to ask employer to make it up to 16 hours or just say its 16 hours or something?

There are not many jobs around at the moment and being out of work so long i've been really lucky to get this.I want to provide rather than be properly dependant on benefits now my husband has left.

You could offer to work 16 hours for the same pay, as long as it's not minimum wage in which case that would be illegal. I would give it a go. I'm sure if you ask in the right way they won't mind you asking.
  • it's 7 pounds an hour so above minimum wage. What would be the best way to ask as i don't want to look desperate or like a scrounger :(

I would speak to an adviser at the benefit office before jumping too far ahead. You obviously won't be able to live on 15 hours money week, so you will still get benefit top up, rent and council tax benefits, if you go to tax credits these could stop initially while you reapply when tax credits are sorted and that can take 6 to 9 weeks.

Regarding your employer, I wouldn't ask them I you can work 16 hours instead of the contracted 15, things change at 16 hours, like holiday entitlement and sick pay... Maybe when you have been there a week or two you could express an interest in increasing your contracted hours if the opportunity arose, that way you re not asking so much as offering.

    Good Luck and Well Done!
