18/02/2007: Chinese New Year Celebrations from 1100hrs till 1800hrs.
This year’s Chinese New Year Celebrations take place in Chinatown, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square. This major event gets bigger and bigger every year. The day will start at 11.00am with a Parade of hundreds of performers along The Strand, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue. The parade will assemble in Exeter Street and finish in Rupert Street (south side) at approximately 1.00pm.
In order for the Parade to take place and as a result of the increasingly large numbers of public attending, the section of Charing Cross Road from Cambridge Circus to Trafalgar Square and the section of Shaftesbury Avenue from Piccadilly Circus to Cambridge Circus will be closed for all vehicle movements from 10am - 6.30pm on Sunday 18 February only. The Strand will also be closed to traffic from 10am - 12 midday. Temporary diversions will be in place for the bus routes effected.
Police and stewards will be in place at the road closures and at adjoining roads. During the parade itself, there will be stewarded crossing points and barriers on either side of the carriageway of Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue. Once the parade is completed, numbers permitting, the barriers will be removed and the carriageway will be available so that audiences can move more safely between China Town, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square and congestion can be reduced.
Another addition for 2007 will be a one way system for pedestrians in China Town itself. This will operate between 12.00 - 6.30pm on Sunday 18 February and will be in place to ensure everyone can move around Chinatown in comfort and safety. During this period, access into Chinatown is from Shaftesbury Avenue only.
