Working part time + self employment at same time

I am currently registered self employed. As of today I am in the last stage of getting a part time temporary Christmas position. If I do get the job, how does this affect self employment and who do I have to speak to?
I am registered as self employed (since begining May) but have recently stopped selling via ebay until wedding season picks up next year. I have my P45 which is from my last employment. I have nothing regarding being self employed. How does this P45 work, if I get the job?

You only need to inform tax credits and any other people you get benefits from such as housing benefit.

In regards to HMRC you don't need to do anything. As it is a Christmas position, I would just complete a P46 saying it is a second job. You will pay tax on the whole amount however you'd pay basic rate on what you earned anyway as it is unlikely the employer would receive a tax code from the tax office in the time you're there.

When it comes to self assessment time, you would fill in the self employed section and also the PAYE section for this temporary job. Tax you owe would be calculated, the amount you've paid through PAYE deducted from that amount and you sent a bill for the difference or a refund if you have overpaid.
  • I am in exactly the same position OP. When you get your self assessment form in April you will need to ask HMRC for the extra pages you need as you worked. It sounds like you may only need to fill out the short version anyway which is really easy.
I am going to work extra hard in my part-time position in the hope that they keep me on after Christmas :)
