School Playground Gritting

Our village school has not gritted the playground, most of it is an ice rink. The kids have had no play times for the past 2 days as its too dangerous.
We have been told that apparently if they grit it and their is an accident then the school is liable. If they don't grit it then the children can see its slippy and will be more careful, if they fall its then their fault!!
I have never heard such rubbish. Surely if a child or parent slips over and the school has not gritted they could be in just as much trouble.
What has the world come too!
I am actually a dinner lady at school and its hell when its indoor play. It's a lovely bright day again and the kids will be in a hot stuffy school again all day.

I read in our local paper that our council have a rule that schools must grit the playgrounds to prevent accidents and any ensuing compo cases. I only knew this because of the snow we had earlier this week and it was all over the paper.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110

Sorry but i agree with the schools policy. Years ago i worked in a school and one winter when it was really icy and snowy one of the boys fell on a sheet of ice and somehow the ice actually cut into his leg, he needed 6 stitches in it so you can imagine how bad it was. After that they closed the school for 3 days so they could make it safe. Inspectors started to walk around the outside of the school daily very early to see if it was safe enough for the pupils to go in. I'm quite sure you would be very angry if it was your child that had ended up with stitches in his/ her leg.0

In the good old days we used to make slides the whole length of the playground, of course in those day people knew if it was icy it would be slippy and took extra care, that was in the days before the nanny state. I hardly dare tell you that we also made slides on the village pond, it was always the golden rule that someone's dad tried it first to make sure the ice was thick enough, I don't remember any accidents, just good fun.0
