Patient confidentiality breach - dilemma

Comments

  • Not sure if it would matter, but where is the whiteboard? is it in full visibility of visitors to the ward or in a separate office? Just wondering if it'd be a breach of confidentiality if it's on full view to anybody who goes on to the ward.

They are often on the ward for practical reasons, but distribution of the information beyond the ward would be a breach.
  • The person reponsible is currently on maternity leave and I don't have her contact details so could only contact her through facebook anyway, I would prefer to obviously speak to her in person about it rather than send a private message through facebook but I guess that's not to be, I am not a 'snitch' as someone suggested earlier, I don't want to get her into trouble as she is good worker and I do believe she probably hasn't even realised, my question was more on getting the feel for if others felt this was a breach of confidentiality or was I overreacting and how as members of the public you would feel this would be best dealt with.

At the end of the day, I am not interested in whether taking this further would do me any favours or not, as someone pointed out earlier I have a professional responsibility to my employer and my governing body to protect my patients, not make a name for myself in either a positive or negative way.

People get stuck too far up their backsides these days and jump up and down causing havoc instead of doing the decent, honest and down to earth thing and simply pointing it out to the person who did it. The reply above saying report it report it makes me lose the will to live. Same type of person who would sue for whiplash given a tiny bump, or complain to the council if their neighbour dared put up a garden shed etc!

If we all learned to live, accept and UNDERSTAND other humans we would be in a much better place.

I definitely don't think you're overreacting. It is a breach. If you can't talk to her about it then I'd report it. I wouldn't want to put anything in writing to her as in a facebook message as it could backfire on you and you could be disciplined for not reporting it properly.

A word with the person its a training issue rather than a full blown suspension etc unless irreparable damage emanates from the incident.opinion only. I hope you have acted to get her to take the image off as thats the most important thing to be done quickly.
Facebook has a private message facility no need for it to be public.

All NHS employees have data protection/ confidentiality training. If they are not aware or do not understand what this entails, they need refresher training.

I didn't, as a HCA. Their training is often really basic and inadequate if it exists at all. You'd probably be helping this member of staff enormously by explaining to her why its a problem.

It's so common now to simply upload ALL the photos off your camera/phone she might not even have seen the picture since it was taken.
A friend of mine just uploads everything, even the blurry pics, and most of the time doesn't look through them again.
Your best bet is to send her an email through facebook to point it out and then it's up to her what she does.

what is so confidential about someones name? any visitors would have seen the board anyway. OP do the right thing and have a word with the owner of the facebook page, even if it is against the rules it wasnt done with any malice and you could end up ruining someones life by grassing.
This country is getting more and more f*cked each and every day, do hospitals actually treat paople anymore or are they too busy with s*it like this.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.

I'd be too busy to be taking photographs but surely common sense tells you not to take anything other than medical photographs.

At my hospital trust, any mention of work on a social networking site is a disciplinary offence. Also IG training is mandatory and all staff have to pass a test.
