removing a Default from Credit Report (6 years love!)

Hi there,

I was recently refused credit when applying for a current account - yes I know about Citibank now :-) I got a copy of my credit report and found out why, there was a default on there which I had forgotten about, head in the sand, my own fault. I immediately settled the debt, and now my credit report shows it as having been satisfied, however as far as I am aware, the default will be there for 6 years! Is it really going to take that long? OMG! Is there any way I can have it removed sooner?

p.s - I'm not going to try a credit repair agency

many thanks

Rich

  • Try contacting the company that placed your default on your credit file and ask them to remove it, failing that contact the credit agencies and ask them to check that the information on the file is correct, they'll contact the company to find out, if they don't reply in 28days/ a month the credit agencies will possibly remove it for you. Other than that if you never recieved a default notice in the first place you could try to contest it see the link : http://www.learnmoney.co.uk/credit-cards/remove_default_notice.html

    Gold luck.

What date was the default from, as I believe that the 6 years starts from the date the account defaulted rather than when you pay off the debt.

DMUK is correct. 6 years starts from the date of default.
  • Thanks for the replies, all very useful.

I am not sure exactly when the default started. ...it all came about when I got paid twice around 2-3 years ago. I didn't intend to spend the money :-) no, seriously though I didn't, I knew they'd want it back, but things were so tight at the time, I'd run out of money on other bills and had this sum to take it from. I knew it was wrong but sometimes one does the wrong thing :-( no excuses...

Anyway I stopped reading my mail for quite a long time, because it was all seriously bad news. I've gotten a grip on it all now and have taken care of almost anything. (BIG council tax arrears that I lose sleep over)

I will try writing to the credit reference agency, that may work, thanks for the suggestions.

Well, if you have a copy of your credit report then it should show on there the date that account defaulted.

Yep, I am in a similar boat and mine shows the exact date when the default became active.

If it was 2/3 years ago with any luck most of that time will already have come off your "freedom" date.
  • You are right, I've got the default date, it's May last year. I genuinely don't remember receiving a notice of it actually, so I might try writing to them and see if they can find their records. Perhaps they didn't follow procedure and will remove it...

    I don't fancy my chances :-)

  • Hi DMUK, do you mean, will any luck you've onl;y got 3/4 years left with it on your credit?

I can't believe i let it happen, I have a baby due soon, and it's making so many things in my life so difficult.. I'll see how the paperwork attempt goes.

  • The debt went to a debt recovery agency. I would think that means I must of received a default notice but I guess they could have still missed that step. What do you think, is it worth a try?
  • You should have got a letter warning that you were heading for a Default from the original company you owed the money too, then when you failed to pay you should have got the default notice then. When your debt was sold on both the original company and the DCA should have sent you letters to say so, so you'd know who to repay. Failing that go to the link above and follow that to try clear your default.
