Claiming Tax Back

Hi, I have been told by a guy at work that he has gone through a company to claim back tax for his uniform to be cleaned, about £60 per year and going back for 6 years. The company will charge him for this service. Is there a free way to do this and also can I check my tax code to make sure I am not paying to much. I work full time for the Royal mail. cheers

You need to ring the HMRC and as far as I know it is the tax on £60, not the whole £60
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    Simply phone HMRC.
can I check my tax code to make sure I am not paying to much.

    What is your tax code?
  • lots of happy reclaimers here.
The uniform has to be a uniform (A lady barrister tried to claim and was told only the wig qualified) usually with a company logo.
There are scale fees for most trades or you can try to add up all the costs for a year, keep your evidence and reclaim that.
Depending on your marginal pay rate you might get back 20%, 30% 40% or 50% in tax relief.

Normal tax code is 747L so you are getting an extra allowance of £120.

What does your P2 coding notice say about this allowance?

Where do I get the P2 code. Not sure why I would get an extra £120.

Because you are receiving an expense allowance of £120 per year which is the Royal Mail's locally agreed allowance for upkeep of uniform and equipment?

From a P2 (Coding Notice) that HMRC send to most people when they have a non mainstream code.
