Hi
My son left school this year and is actively seeking employment - along with all the others.
I suggested he now sign on for JSA but he's not keen to start on benefits in case he gets used to them. How long do they pay it for?
Also, we've heard of people being forced to take jobs that are just too far away to be believed (he doesn't drive, yet) how true is this?
Just weighing up his options really.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,
I'm claiming JSA allowance at the moment due to redundancy.
I can't help with your Son and allowances as I'm rather abit older
so not sure of whats allowed.
However, I doubt he will get used to the amount, its only £67.50 a week and about £10 less for 16-24 year olds - that bit I do know, well I think its upto 24 anyway. So not very much money really.
I'm only going to get this for 6 months (hope to find a job way before that, obviously) so again its not long enough to get used to it.
As for being sent for job, I've not experienced it as long as you do as you are asked for the money.
JSA is obviously Job Seekers Allowance and for this you have to look for a job 3 times aweek, which as you say, your son is doing. Then sign on at the job centre every two weeks. So not much of an effort at all.
I have been asked how far I am prepared to travel and what days/hours I want to work and as long as I look for jobs following this, I've been fine.
I've just finished a temporary job which lasted for 8 and a half months, before that I was unemployed for almost 6 months, even then there was no question of me "being sent" to an unsuitable job. As I say as long as you do what they ask and you agree to, you will be fine.0 -
If your son is living at home shouldn't he be claiming JSA and giving it to you for his keep?
There are rules about how far you can be expected to travel. For me it started as 60 minutes and after a while went up to 90 minutes.0 -

He and the advisor (when he signs on) will agree on how far he should be looking for work, as he doesn't drive then it will mean using the bus unless you take him and pick him up. Has he looked at all the xmas jobs (if any that are available) that are advertised.0 -

If he meets the requirements placed on him he can claim dole until retirement age.
Around here the travel to work area is 30 miles in one direction. What do you class as "too far away to be believed?" People in Hull whine if they have to go out of town to work, even if it is only a couple of miles.0 -
How old is your son?0

If your son is under 18 then he can't claim JSA.0

If the OP was able to support the son throughout his education which has only recently ended then is it really essential that he signs on just to give the money to the OP?
The OP is likely to have been claiming Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits for her son while he was in education. As her son is no longer in education the CB and CTC will stop.0 -
Thanks to all for your input, that's a great help

He's 18. I am not interested in him giving it to me - goodness. When he gets a job we can think about him paying for his keep.
Anyway, thanks again, I will let him know.0
