Just over a year ago I was given a substantial sum of Euros as a present from a great aunt. My bank - Northern - took 3 weeks to pay out on it and the exchange rate they gave me was dire. I'm told this is normal for banks here.
The experience told me that if I was ever in this position again I would take a day off work and go open an account at a bank over the border then withdraw the Euro and change it to sterling somewhere that will give me a good rate.
I'm told this should take a week max rather than the 3 weeks Northern took to pay out.0 -
Open an account with First Trust. You can lodge it there and they will give you the exchange rate on the day.0

would it be better to return it and ask for a sterling bank draft .It was issued by Bank off Ireland (ROI),or would they rob me on that ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Not sure if there is a difference between how the bank treats a bank draft and a personal cheque but the cheque I lodged was also from a BoI account. The most annoying thing was that the money left my aunt's account less than a week after I lodged it and the bank took a full fortnight to make the money available to me.0

It is certainly worth asking them what they would give you in sterling.
Otherwise, open a Euro account somewhere; pay it in; then use a currency broker to get the funds into a sterling account at a decent rate.0
