Which pocket sprung mattress?

I can't decide which pocket sprung mattress to buy. I was wondering if you could recommend some good brands which I should be looking out for?

I'll need a double (4'6").
Has to be pocket sprung.
Medium-Firm.
Not a fan of memory foam.
Quality.
Under £250.

I quite like the John Lewis Value Pocket Sprung mattress and it seems to get good reviews so I'm hoping to try it out in the store soon. Are they good quality?

Just had a look at the webpage http://www.johnlewis.com/230943975/Product.aspx - it says "online exclusive" and I'd rather try one before purchase. Have you checked that it is available in store?

Any pocket sprung mattress 4ft6 under £250 is always going to be an entry model. To be fair £250 is quite a small budget your not going to get a Quality mattress I'm sorry to say.

We got lucky at a Feather and Black shop - an end-of-line, ex-demo mattress for £200, originally marketed at well over a grand, superking and worth every penny. Cheaper because it was superking, fewer people can fit them in their bedrooms, stock moves slower, etc., so worth looking at different sizes if you have the space!

We also bought a cherrywood superking bed base (with another decent mattress) secondhand for £51 on ebay - hardly used, the couple moved house and couldn't fit it in. It really is where the deals are if you have the space - and there is no way you'll ever go back to a double afterwards ;-)

I don't believe it for one minute that you got a £1,000 worth of mattress for £200. They may as well written the stock off against tax rather then take a massive loss like that. Too many "savy" people on this site just adding to why shops do "sales". "I got a bargain". Hmmmm I'm sure.

Try Tranquility beds (sorry unable to add full www address!) site they have a Mayfair pocket Sprung mattress for your budget which we purchased recently and have been quite happy. The mattress was made by Westminster beds
  • Just bumping this as I have the exact same query, except I can go up to £300 max and want a kingsize. I've read a fair few mattress threads on here :) but am still clueless as to which mattress/es would be best to at least consider in my budget range. Was also thinking about the John Lewis one and wondered if the OP ended up buying it or if anyone has the JL value pocket sprung mattress and what they thought of it?
    Thanks!

The John Lewis mattress will not be great value for money, just look at their over heads, massive store with lots of heating and lighting to pay for.

Also anything with the word "value" in the title I believe always means to be entry level, not very good. Think of Value baked beans etc...

  • Yeah, I was rather afraid of that. I feel I could probably get a little more quality for the same price elsewhere - but just don't know where to look... hence asking here.
  • Have a look at Ikea. Now I know their sizes are European rather than UK but don't let that be the decising factor as our king size stuff fits their larger than king size mattress.

Join their Family (can do when you go) and go to your store (or check a few) specific offers and Family area to see what discounts there are. I've found them helpful when phoning for future discounts as well.
