John Lewis - some questions

Hi all.

Got my first ever job, at John Lewis, during my gap year. This is a Christmas temp role, and I have a few questions you may be able to help me with:

1) What are the conditions for getting the annual bonus? I heard somewhere that this is only paid to those working at a certain time of the year, if so could anyone enlighten me, if not could anyone tell me when the bonus will be paid/if it is paid to temps?

2) Is there any chance at all of getting kept on after Christmas? Other than work my absolute hardest, is there anything I can do to help my case?

3) How likely am I to get extra hours if I ask? The role is part time with about twenty hours per week, but I would love to volunteer for more (if I'm working, I might as well be working). The HR woman who phoned to offer me the job said I could ask my manager if I wanted more, but does anyone have any practical experience of how likely this is?

4) How long before staff discounts kick in?

I appreciate I can find most of this out if I ask on my first day, but it would be nice to get a heads up first, and I know there are plenty of knowledgeable people around here. Cheers.

  • i could be wrong but can you really see them paying an annual bonus to temp staff working over christmas?
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?

I understand that once you're there, be you temp or permanent you're a "partner" who shares in the benefits of the business. But I did also hear that this was only paid if you were around at the time of year when they awarded the bonus.

    .

1 - Are you working for them or through an agency? if you're working through an agency you're not staff so probably wouldn't be eligible for a bonus.

2 - hope it stays busy enough to warrant keeping extra staff on

3 - If it's busy enough you might get more

    4 - See 1

No it's direct not through an agency. Hopefully retail in general may pick up a bit then.

2 - do what hours you can when asked and also offer to do any extra hours eg on a sunday, if you offer then its possible he will remember you offered and he will ask you if you can still work sunday. Try not to make any c*ck ups, if your not sure on anything ask, theres possibly going to be shifts others dont like doing(eg sundays.) so put yourself forward for them.

3 - partly answered in 2, depends how busy the store is, think how busy the store is on a saturday and times it by say 4 when nearer xmas, i can imagine everyday as we get nearer xmas will start to get busier and busier because people will book a day off to go shopping with partner/gf etc to buy gifts or what not.

I think only permanent staff are classed as 'partners' and therefore receive a bonus. There may also be a pro rata system whereby you would receive part of that percentage according to how long you'd been there. So for example if you started halfway through the year you would get half the amount. Where I work you get 50% of the bonus (if one has been awarded) if you have been there less than 12 months but more than 6. If you've been there less than 6 you don't qualify that year.

When I worked there, the qualifying date for a bonus was 31 Jan, its paid pro rata, but I dont know if its paid to temp staff as I was permanent.

I think you only get the discount after being there for 3 months. It is 25% of everything, apart from electricals that is 12%. Waitrose 12%. I used to work for Next a few years ago and got the discount after 2 weeks!
