I am really sorry that I came to this site. It is nearly 2am and after the unkind words from some of the responces I am unable to sleep. I feel this evening has set me back months and the feeling of being totally over whelmed is back with a vengence.

We have tried everything to get work / get better paid work to no avail. Some people get the work others don't, there is an increasing number of people unemployed, are all those people going to be clearers too? How many businesses are going to close before you can see this with your own eyes.

We have already downsized once and a one bedroom flat is not an option. If fact the cost of moving house reaches into the thousands in any case, and before you all start with the "i moved house in a wheel barrow, walked 20 miles back and forth and still did a full time job" I have done this less than 15 months ago and NO YOU DIDN'T! It is an expensive enterprise in both terms of time and money.

The situation is hopeless, I can no longer even mention any of this to my OH without a row and in fact I have no idea why I'm even bothering with this any longer.

Yes I will be homeless soon, no I will never get credit again, I will have this hanging over me till I die because there is no way out. Whatever.

I particularly liked the "I starved myself for 2 out of every 3 days" I would rather die than live like that, you are a moron!

so that some smug banker can get another bonus on the back of hard working people! you have to be joking.

Feeling sorry for yourself, criticising those who are trying to help you - this will not do you any good.

    Your attitude needs to improve.
Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.

Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j

There is also the freelance sites - Peopleperhour/elance/freelancer/odesk, etc where you might be able to pick up work from the comfort of your settee. Yes, it is difficult to get work when you first start out and you might need to work for buttons, but if you are any good and can build a reputation you can earn a decent bit of money that way.
  • This is only a suggestion so please don't shoot me down.

Is there anything in particular that is tying you to Dorset? Apart from it being a beautiful part of the world?

The reason I ask as you are renting there isn't really anything keeping you there like a long drawn out house sale. Have you considered moving to somewhere in the UK where there are better paid jobs, or jobs that suit you and your partners qualifications better?

I am originally from Northern Ireland. When I was 11 my Dad had to move to London just to get work, he like you was degree qualified and still struggled to find work, that was 22 years ago and he is still there! He had to leave behind me and my 3 siblings and his wife and we saw him about twice a year (Christmas and Summer) just so he could get work to keep a roof over our heads and keep us fed.

When I was 21 I too found that moving to London was the only way to find a secure well paid job. I'm 33 now and I wish I was wth my family and friends back home but that increasingly looks more and more impossible. I have been lucky though, I have only ever applied for 2 jobs and got them both, however I applied in a market where there was plenty of demand for qualified people not in an area of high unemployment.

I think you should look at all your options and this may be one of them, even if it's for 4 or 5 years then retire back to the beautiful South Coast on a low paid job but with no debt. The people on here are trying to help but it seems you have your head set on bankruptcy no matter what.

Desperado, I really do feel for you. I can't help with advice because my situation is different, but I do understand how this is dragging you down. Advice re jobs for your partner is very well meant , but I know that in some parts of the country there are just very few jobs of any sort to be found( especially if you are rural) ...or as I know locally literally 150 going for 1 job ( it's difficult everywhere but some areas are much worse),

I think when you get to your 50s and are still this far off from being financially comfortable it is much harder to keep positive than when you are younger ( I know this! my son put it well when he said that he could see why I was more upset that I have made mistakes financially which leave me 'balanced precariously' ..."because you know you have less time to put it right!"). Also as you get older you become aware that with the best will in the world you can't work till you drop, that your back, knees just won't do what they used to.

I hope someone can give you advice, CAB or on the boards here. Very best of luck.

PS being 50+ I also remember that when younger there were jobs to 'walk into', it comes as a blow that it isn't like that anymore...and that too grinds one down.

  • lovely heartwarming story of enterprise and triumph over adversity from firewyrm - well done to you. I will just say though that the economy and the EU during the 90's when you were able to climb your way up is vastly different to the world we live in now and whilst i agree with some of the points made to the OP feel that it is unrealistic to expect them to just get a job doing anything. My ex lost his job in February and has applied for 109 jobs with possible 2 interviews - he can't even get a driving job for Tesco when they are advertising. My OH has taken a £15k annual paycut from losing his job in february 2007 (feb seems a bad month for us huh?) and the level of job he had then just don't exist any more.

    Best of luck desparado :)

What about downshifting supermarkets and looking in Aldi or Lidl to see if you can get this cheaper. Also we sometimes do what I call autoshop, ie put the same old in the trolley every week without REALLY thinking if it gets used. So maybe inventorying what you already have in and then meal planning around that would help with this spend. I think you mentioned you have already been over to the oldstyle forum board, but again there are lots of recipes on there that are very cheap. Also star drops and soda crystals are your friend for cutting down on household cleaning products!

Car Insurance........................... 70 again ouch. Does one of you have points? Is this for both of you? If you have had your insurance policy with the same insurer for more than a year, you are almost guaranteed to be paying too much! Check out the moneysupermarket website to check out this, then if you do have a cheaper option, go via a cash back site to get more money off the deal. I am in my 40's and my OH also and our insurance on a renault laguna estate was only 300 pounds for a year for both of us.
