second job - higher tax

Im considering a second job through an agency (LGV Driving) as I only work 14 days a month currently. Problem is i'm already over my 40% tax with my first employer, because of contractual overtime and shift allowances.
If I get some odd days work through an agency, who taxes me? Do they take it off before I get paid, or do I get paid and then declare it myself?

Also I guess I'll pay 40% on the earnings, what about NHI? Will i pay this also on a second wage? And if so, is there a way of working out how much I'd pay as a percentage?

Trying to work out if it'll be worth my while looking into

many thanks in advance

You'll need to pay 40% tax on the second job if you're already into the 40% bracket at the first. You'll need to complete a P46 which will mean the employer uses the BR code (22%). About four weeks later you'll then need to contact your main office (the one that deals with your main employment) to request they issue the D0 (40%) code for your new job.

If your earnings at your main job are in excess of £2,795 per month, you should be able to defer paying most (or all) Class 1 contributions on the second job. Otherwise if your combined earnings at both jobs are in excess of £3,215 per month, again you should be able to defer, but may have to pay a balance at the year end. This PDF leaflet should be able to explain it better than me!
Quidco savings: £499.49 tracked, £494.35 paid.
