Work Notice Advice

Good Afternoon everyone,
I handed my notice from my employer last week to go and work for a competitor. My contract states 4 weeks notice. However in my industry it is usual to waiver the notice or give garden leave for the 4 weeks, which is what normally happens at my workplace as being in sales I am not allowed contact with customers. However in my case because they are very angry at me leaving and have told me I have to work in the Warehouse for my 4 weeks. My Contract of Employment tells me That I am employed as Telesales I also suffer sciatica and working in the warehouse would involve heavy lifting and other manual tasks.
Could anyone please advise what my options are?
Regards

If your employer is angry at you leaving it does not sound like they will give you a good reference as you are not leaving on good terms so raise a grievance or just leave early.0

why are they angry? Are you not allowed to leave?0 -
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. My employer is angry as I am going to a rival company which are in the same business.
Yes I have thought about the grievance procedure, the reason I just don't quit is if I do not turn up for 4 weeks and then start with ny new employer after this, I would not be paid for previous employment and then would not get paid from my new employer until the end of the following month. Meaning no wage for 2 months.

Turn up. You can't get out of that.
But refuse to do ANY lifting, citing your sciatica, until you have had a full risk assessment. Then ask for an Occupational Health Assessment. Then get your Occupational Health Assessment reviewed by your own GP. Who will probably want to charge. Then argue that the company should pay for the review. This will either take the whole 4 weeks or they will be fed up with you and send you home.
Always be willing to do Sales during this period.
My feeling is that they are only trying this on because they feel that you are soft enough that they can get away with it. You need to be fairly resilient to carry this off. Time to learn.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

They won't just send you home. They'll just stick you in the Goods In/Goods Out office...0

Hiya Hamnmy
thanks for the reply but I guess you have never worked at a wholesalers. Goods in and good out require alot of handballing stuff of lorries in goods in and picking orders to go out some of which can be quite hefty.
But thanks
