Washing muslin cloths

Just a question about muslin cloths, when I bought the LE ones the other day the assistant advised me to not use fabric conditioner when washing them and to put them in with towels. I tend to put fabric conditioner in every wash but if I do put them in with my towels they are all dark coloured and the muslin cloths are white so won't the colours run? If I put them in with my white wash then I don't fancy not putting the conditioner in with my whites just to accomodate those cloths.

I know this cleanse and polish system is supposed to be great but what a faff over the cloths.

    1. You shouldn't put conditioner in with towels.

    2. You should have TOLD the assistant that your towels are all dark; she might have had some relevant advice; nevertheless if they've been washed a few times they're probably not going to lose any more dye.

3 It doesn't matter IF your muslins aren't 'white' - no-one's going to look at them. Wash them with your towels without conditioner - they'll be fine.

  • I just washed mine as normal with soap powder and fabric conditioner, I would use a stain catcher (I cut mine in half) and they'll be fine.

Dunno - apparently it reduces their absorption. My towels dry hard on the line - but if I get them *almost* dry on the line then treat them to a half-hour tumble (oo err missus) they are soft, smell gorgeous and dry (me) beautifully!

Fabrix softener reduces the absorbtion of towels; and stops them drying so quickly.

I wash my microfibre face cloths on their own without anything else (i have about 30 though so can save them up). I don't even use any podwer/liquid as i think there is enough in the pipes. I always wsh them at 60 degrees as i won't to ensure i am killing all the bacteria.

They have gone a dingy grey but to be honest i don't really care as like someone else said no one else sees them. Every so often i do soak them in Milton to clean them up a bit.
I'm so boring, my clothes wanna keep someone else warm, someone cooler
  • I've been using LE on and off for many years. I've always used fabric conditioner, as I do with my towels. The cloths get softer over time but it doesn't affect their effectiveness, at least not in my opinion. The idea is it's meant to be a gentle exfoliation, and so it really doesn't matter if you have cloths that are slightly softer than they would be without conditioner. As my skin is quite sensitve, I prefer the cloths when they've had a few washes in conditioner.

The colour catcher idea is a good one if you do want to wash the cloths with your darks.

These cloths are great with all skin products - removing face masks and exfoliators.

LE cleanse and polish is actually the best cleanser I've ever tried. Hope you enjoy using it :-)

Boil them in a saucepan with a small amount of soap powder - keeps them lovely and white

i haven't used softener with towels for a few years - it was after a thread on MSE, i'm assuming on oldstyle, about how it makes them less absorbent and less fluffy. i now use softener less and less.... and honestly can't tell the difference.

when i use muslin cloths (or just plain facecloths when i haven't got any clean ones!), i find it's a lot easier to keep them clean if i spend an extra 10 secs rinsing them at the time. some still have what i think are mascara stains, but they still work just as well!

although unless your towels are new, stick the cloths in with them as they shouldn't run if they've been through the wash a few times already.

You need to wash at 90 degrees to do that. ;)

You can steam sterilise damp cloths in the microwave, in a bowl with a bit of water if you've got a few or I put mine in a lidded takeaway container with a bit of water in.
