The right to buy and acquire are not the same. The discount varies depending on which you have. Yes it is to do with transfer to housing associations however some councils have transferred all of their stock to the housing associations and they effectively become the only social housing providers in the area. I believe this is because housing associations can borrow money whereas councils cannot. I know in our area if you were a council tennant transferred to housing association upon sale of stock you retain right to buy with a variable and potentially larger discount than with the right to acquire. So if OP has right to buy they will continue to accumulate a discount, if they have right to acquie they may not and it would make more sense for them to buy now rather than wait.

why not call around a few brokers asking them if they know any lenders that do guarantor mortgages for RTB. ask which lenders and if they tell you give the lender a call. i have seen a guarantor on a RTB once
  • hi, i have spoke to another mortgage advisor who says that we will be able to get a mortgage in both our names through one particular lender as they do not go to the council for a deed of postponement? does this sound dodgy? i really dont know what this means and if it is legal...
my friend spoke to her friend who is a financial advisor and he said that he has recently done this for another couple, and he also warned me off a guarantor mortgage...thankyou everyone for your help
