Which is why I believe that the public sector defined benefit schemes should be scrapped - they don't do the job of attracting and retaining staff because so many potential and actual staff don't appreciate their value, but the taxpayer has to fund them just the same. It would be far better to attract and retain by giving higher pay wherever that appears to be necessary, and just offer the legally required minimum in pensions.

Off course the senior civil servants will make sure no such law will ever be drafted. Since I would apply the same logic to MPs' pensions, the Commons would never pass such a law anyway.
