advice on 11 year old debt

About 10-11 years ago I purchased some items at an event on interest free credit. I filled in all the forms and though no more of it. I have just recieved a demand for around £450 relating to this. I think this is the full price of the goods. I have had no communication from anyone regarding this before. I need to check old paperwork to see if this was actually paid as originally arranged all those years ago, and hopefully find the original agreement. However, a lot of time has past and I may not have this paperwork. Can I reasonably be persued for a debt that is so old? Is there not a limit on the amount of time one is required to keep bank statements etc? Any advice appreciated.

Steve

There is no minimum or maximum someone can keep their personal bank statements for.

This is one of the areas of law that seem a little odd to me and so perhaps someone elses response will explain it better to me.

Under the law of limitations they would be statute barred from going to court for the money as the 6 year limit has passed. This doesnt mean they cant continue to chase you etc but ultimately they cant go to court for the money.

Our friends at the OFT however previously released a paper saying that they feel the 6 year limit should not apply where the creditor can demonstrate they have "continuously" attempted to chase/ recover the debt.

I have no idea however if the OFT report is simply a recommendation for the statute to be changed or if it carries any weight on its own

Write to them saying that you acknowledge no debt to them but if you did owe money from 11 years ago it would now be statute barred and unenforcable in court, and you consider this matter closed.
