Cheap Quality LED Torch from Maplin

Options
"Oops just noticed the title makes it look like they are Cheap quality i.e not good. Meant to say Cheap Good Quality" any mods about that can change the title for me please".

Hi,
Maplin currently have the LED Lenser V² Professional Torch in Black on special offer, normally £39.99 now down to £24.99, no delivery charge if you pick one up instore.

These great quality torches are on average £39.99 + P+P online, cheapest elsewhere before the Maplin offer was 7 Dayshop for £29.99 + £3.95 P+P.

I am a bit fussy when it comes to quality items (ask the wife), for torches I have always had Maglites as they are very good at what they do.
I have been looking for an LED replacement for the Maglite and for the price the LED Lenser is hard to beat.
It produces a very bright light for it's size, brighter than traditional Maglites 3 times it's size. It wont fit in your jeans pocket but it'll fit easily into a normal sized coat pocket, it also comes with a belt harness as per the pic.

Just to give you an idea how much I like this brand,
I have added it to my list of all time favourite "geeky" quality products which are:D
1) Berghaus
2) Leatherman
3) LED Lenser
4) Maglite
5) Oakley
6) Tom Tom software

They are made in Germany, not some sweat shop in China so the quality is assured.

Hope this is of use.

That sort of thing is much cheaper at http://www.ledshoppe.com/ledflashlight.htm
  • Is the quality as good though? Of the three I bought from ledshoppe two that I know of have developed a fault within about 10 days. Pity as they look and feel like a good product.

If you want to know more about LED lighting here are a couple of good sites.
    Candle Power Forums link.
    Flash Light Reviews link.

There is a new generation of LEDs coming out at the moment with more efficient emitters. These are just hitting the streets.

For example: Coming soon to a website near you is this 2AA torch. Twice as bright (80 lumens) from 2AA batteries £32.95. Also the single AAA version brighter at 50 lumens but will fit comfortably on a keyring 25.95.

I've no connection with the web site and have no experience of it.

Fenix torches are getting a good reputation as they develop their product range.

LED LENSER manufacture in Germany and also have a factory in China,(link). I wouldn't be able to tell where one was manufactured. I also wouldn't know if one was made in a sweatshop.

Maglite have released a range of LED torches and 7dayshop are knocking 2AA, 3 Watt version for £17.00. (Argos price £39.99)

Anyway there is a recognised illness for people who start buying these kind of things its called "flashaholism".

    Cheers

I forgot to mention The Orb from Devon. If one wanted to spend 35 of ones earth pounds on a torch spend it on one from Devon. Less Mercedes and more E-Type. Available in Aluminium, Titanium and even silver. I think Devon is still in the UK.

    Cheers
  • Simate,
The LED Lenser make is of a much better quality than that cheap tat that Ledshoppe sell, see Geothermal's post below yours.

For a "budget" good quality LED torch the Lenser at £24.99 is hard to beat.

Or you could pay £465 if you really want to on a surefire torch HERE !!!

    skrOOge,
Thanks for the info, interesting about the factory in China.
Also the links to the forums. I am going to the US soon on holiday, so may have a look for a Maglite module to convert my original 2D Maglite.

I do like the look of the Orb, I live in Devon so one may be on the cards :D

Can I get a prescription from the doctor for "flashaholism" :D

Wal Mart in the states were selling the 3watt upgrade for Maglight D series at $18.99 I bought the one for AAA for $8. Wish I got the other as well.
  • Thanks for that Balt, a trip to Walmart sounds like it's on the cards.

Unfortunately flashaholism has no known cure. Symptoms include, hiding lights round the house, furtive waiting for packets being delivered, love of darkened rooms, large collections of batteries, pockets empty of cash but full of EDC lights, whispering "buy both" whilst shopping, large credit card bills, every present you give is a torch you have outgrown, learning that "roar of the pelican" is not an entry for the Booker prize, mastering exposure control on your digital camera.....Being disappointed when anyone wastes money buying you a gift torch.

Prescription is: set your budget now! And stop spending on some other habit before indulging.

That said, you can buy a ropey computer for £150. But, for the same cash you can buy an amazing torch. Or two costing £75 ....

    Cheers
