Secondment selection process

Hi all, I'm new and looking for some advice/info if anyone can help I'd appreciate it

Recently my place of work have been offering opportunities for a two year secondment to other areas around the country with the option of staying on in that role on a perminant basis. Those of us who were interested filled in a short form and were told if required and more than one candidate was suitable for the position (which was very likely as competition would be tough) they would go through an interview process

I have since discovered that positions have been offered to some staff and not others, with no interview process at all, I have other details which lead me to ask the question:

For a secondment position does there have to be a similar strict selection process as there would be with normal employment? Are there any legal implications around simply pulling names out of a hat instead of an interview process when being unable to decide between more than one candidate? Or because it's a secondment position is the company able to pick staff how they see fit, such as pulling names from a hat, for example

It's two year secondment to trial the plan and may lead to nothing, however if the plan goes ahead those in the secondment position will be able to stay in that position on a perminant basis while anyone else would need to apply as with any other job role advertised within the company

The company have recently gone through a huge change making redundancies etc, their main comments around these positions are based around cost effectiveness due to the position of the climate, I have recently been given feedback informing me my competency and ability to perform the role and my application was very high caliber and there was no doubt about weather I would be suitable for the position, however selections have also been made with the consideration of people's geograohical location and cost effective-ness - however the two positions I am local to and stated I would commute to (costing the company nothing) (I already commute an hour to work and these positions are closer) have been filled by two people who are going to be paid to relocate - at up to £150 per week for two years which, considering there's no real difference in our abilities to perform the role, is surely contradicting the plan to be cost effective?

Any help on the question regarding secondment selection process would be much appreciated as I'd like to know weather the company are right to just pick names from a hat (this has been admitted) or weather there should have been a formal selection process based on all factors as stated.

Thanks for reading and I hope this makes sense!

  • No, they have no legal implications around either employment selection or secondment. They can employ who like like save for discriminatory issues. If they have chosen to pay people £150 a week when there are others suitable for the role, who don't need the £150 then there must be a reason for it. Either you are already too spiffing in your role, or the people who they are giving the chance to try the new role are [perhaps] not so spiffing in theirs.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

When I was seconded I was just asked shown details of the role and asked if I was interested. Apparently my bosses had been asked to put names forward and that was why I was asked. So no formal selection procedure.

  • There is no requirement to recruit for any job, secondment or not, in any particular way, as long as there is no discrimination in legal terms.

If a company wants to just pick names out of a hat, so be it. I know it seems a ridiculous way to choose someone, but it could be that all things considered equal, and all candidates being suitable, they thought it would be a fair way to do it - a random selection. This stops any 'why her and not me' questions. In theory, except of course now you are asking that. If you'd been chosen though because of your geographical location, the other candidates might be saying that's not fair. This was the way the company chose to do things so you all got an equal chance of getting the job.

  • Thanks very much for the speedy replies everyone, I feared that would be the case so shall drop the issue now and continue on!

    Thanks again for the help!

I would think it incredibly unlikely they picked names from a hat - i.e that they made a totally random choice. They will have had their reasons (whether those reasons are fair or not they will have been best for them).
