Carpet cleaning in case of fleas

I have been given a lovely rug. It looks clean, but I know the house it came from has a dog and cat. Does anyone have any suggestions how it can be cleaned to make sure there are no fleas or ticks laying dormant?

I don't have a carpet cleaner or steamer. But was wondering if anyone can recommend a spray or something that I could use perhaps?

You could spray with Indorex or Acclaim both are flea sprays for the home and should kill anything that might be lying dormant in it, i think they are around £10 a can, but they really do work.......

    3rd :D

Indorex is my preferred treatment - I use it once/twice a year all round skirting boards, sofas, doors etc... I don't have any pets but it does a great job of killing spiders too :D

depending on what it's made from you could run a hot-ish iron over the back and front...?

If you use indoorex etc you will need to do a few apps as it doesn't kill all stages of the flea life cycle. There is quite a new product called Skoosh or something like that which works on all stages so one treatment is all that's required. I have used it before, it's a silicone so it coats the flea egg, lavae or whatever and it can't breathe, no toxins.

Acclaim is really good. costs around £12 a can from Pets at Home. and one can will do a medium size 3 bed home. of course, if you have a chest freezer you could pop the rug into some bin bags and leave them in the freezer for about 24 hours - I hear that kills off the fleas.
