Need Amalgams Removed

Hello:

I currently receive DLA, Incapacity Benefit and have recently applied for Income Support, which My Welfare Rights Officer states I am entitled to. I have not been to a dentist in approximately 5-7 years since my previous one wasn't very professional.

I am aware of a holistic dentist in Edinburgh who uses ozone therapy and does not uses amalgam. I would like to know if I can get my fillings removed and how to go about getting a new dentist on the NHS?

Best,
GoneSavage

To get A nhs dentist ask for recommendations and ring around . Contact your local health board for details of whose list may be open at the moment. Many areas will operate waiting lists for nhs dentists.

No dentist on the NHS will remove amalgams and replace them with something else, unless the filling needs replacing and even then amalgam would still be used in the majority of cases. In fact most dentists private or nhs will refuse to remove perfectly good fillings and replace them unless there is a problem with the filling. Every time you remove a filling you make the hole bigger and deeper and more likely to cause problems. Every filling material has problems and that includes White fillings which contain toxic chemicals themselves. Indeed the world health organisation has said that amalgam should only be phased out once current filling materials improve.

I have heard of people getting their amalgam fillings removed but I got the impression it was done privately. My guess is the dentist would have to see it as a necessity or clinical need in order to remove them on the nhs.

Why do you 'need' them removed?

There has never , to my knowledge, been a proven case of " mercury poisoning" verified by a consultants report that gave the go ahead for a nhs dentist to remove amalgam fillings. Up until the recent past you had to apply for approval to replace amalgam fillings with composite. It was very very, very occaisionally given for the replacement of one or two fillings where they were associated with lichen planus but for no other reason.
In the past many bogus operators had pseudo scientific tests such as the vega test which "proved" problems with peoples fillings but they were untterly discredited.

Interestingly removing amalgam fillings does actually raise mercury levels so that is another reason not to remove them. However the biggest source of mercury in most people is oily fish in their diet.
