make sure it's generally clean and tidy and smells nice. wipe off any damp/mold and open all the windows. hide anything like candles or things pinned on the wall- these are generally no-nos that everyone does anyway.

ooo could i ask why you should hide candles?

I'm not doing the same thing, but i thought candles look nice (if unburnt) or was that what you were meaning anyway?
  • thanks - good idea i forgot about candles! :o

A lot of rentals (especially students, studios and short term lets) forbid candles as they're a hazard(? maybe), same with blutak/pins/any change to decor! Most people ignore it and change it back at the end :D

Well thank you for that, i now feel slightly thick! lol, but very good logic. :o
  • yes i think that is the reason they ban candles.

don't think mine states no candles but to be safe they will disappear for the duration.

i know it is necessary but doesn't feel nice, like an invasion
  • i recently had a property inspection - from my HA - so gave the place a quick clean - especially paintwork around doors etc - and walls (where the dogs have had a good shake) i use a como of sterilising powder (that i use for my homebrew) and vinegar - mixed with water and put in a spray bottle - with a small dash of washing up liquid - and that cleans everything just about

vinegar is also very good at getting rid of bad/ musty/stale smells etc (ideal for my smoking and cheesy feet dogs)

the things they checked for included:
    clean windows
clean decor - including any peeling wallpaper
    clean woodwork etc
    clean floors
    no damage to property
tidy garden - including having the grass cut

my biggest challenge was going around the garden - making sure that there was no doggie poop hiding in the flower beds etc

i must have done a good job - as i passed the inspection :T

hope it goes smoothly for you

  • How reasonable do they tend to be?

As in forgiving a muddy kitchen floor because myself and dog have just got in after being outside at work all day, but look I've put in a babygate to stop said mud spreading throughout the house...?

Just a thought for the future, I think I'm on 6-monthly inspections so that'll be about January *eek*

  • i wondered how reasonable they have to be too! i haven't cleaned the windows in the 4 months i've been here. hmm

I just tend to make sure the place is tidy, we have an inspection every 3 months. She usually stands in the hallway with a clipboard, asks if everything is ok, ticks her list and says see you in 3 months.

She only goes into any other rooms if I want to show her a problem.

We do tend to get our landlord round a lot as he is very hands on and does any repairs himself (he actually built all the bungalows in our close and kept a few to rent) so I would imagine if we were doing something they didn't like or were not keeping the property clean enough we would soon know!
