Reference requests

Just wanted some advice please.
I recently got a provisional job offer and was asked to provide references from my previous/present managers.
I was asked by the prospective employer to inform these people to expect a reference request. Which I did so.
One of my old bosses contacted me to say they have recieved the request, but they are unable to fill it out as it is their company policy for the HR Manager to complete the reference request.
I know that in my time there I didn't do anything wrong etc, so I'm not worrying about the content of the reference, my question is will my prospective employer accept the reference as it has come from the HR manager and not the Manager that I gave them the details for and who they requested the reference from? And is this practice the norm in some companies?
Thanks in advance

Doesnt matter at all, its very common for HR policies to specify they are the only ones that can provide references.
Your ex manager should pass it to HR and HR should respond to the prospective employer.0 -
Agreed, it is totally normal and your new employer will be happy for it to come from HR rather than your manager. Depending on the level of info they give, it may come from the manager anyway or it could be simple stats.0

Thanks for your responses to my question, I was just worried they may not accept it, I have giving them all of my working history for reference requests and that I wouldn't have anyone else to put forward for a reference! Thanks guys!0

They should be used to getting references from the HR department0
