I think this is a bit of a scare story put out by equifax because they see they may lose business, one way or another !

"However, by taking this action they are probably only making it more difficult to shop online and by mail order."

This is hogwash - I have never had the slightest difficulty in buying online !

Well it does stop the reference agencies using your details for targeting junk mail I suppose....

I opted out some years ago, and have been electronically verified by several institutions since then (eg no further documentation required to open accounts).

Same here - I have always opted out of the electoral roll and never had a problem ordering on-line etc. This does seem to be the work of a company who stand to lose out on business through not having access to as many personal details as before.
I work for a company which processes on-line payments and we don't use the electoral roll, rather an on-line version of Chip and Pin to verify cardholder details.

I have never opted out and never had a single issue with my details being available. I am not in the TPS or MPS and yet receive no direct marketing with the one exception of a set of free drinks vouchers for my 18th b'day from a local company.

Just careful who I give my address to and make sure tick/ dont tick the sell details box correctly
