Choosing my first flatscreen telly - help!

Yes, I must confess... I have never until now owned a widescreen, flat television. I know. My nerd-cred is now nonexistant!
I'm a little unsure as to what to go for. Firstly we have the LED/Plasma debacle.
Also, I am unsure as to which manufacturer to go for. I'm looking around the £400 ($650) mark.
Any advice would be VERY welcome. I really have no idea.
(Oh and I will be using it for tv, gaming and movies in a relatively bright room and I get picky about bad sound!)

Screen size? To be wall-mounted? Do you want HD Freeview? Do you want Internet connectivity?0

I'm on Virgin so already get the HD stuff. I don't see any need for the internet... though correct me if I'm wrong on this. And not sure I can persuade the missus to wall mount it.
I am however mainly bothered about picture quality and sound and am looking around 32-37" as the missus wont have bigger (preferably 32").
I'd be watching in a bright room and would like decent white/black contrast.0 -
