there was a chat on here from someone who worked for them explaining that sky phone operators get so many "offers" to offer folk over the week, and that they hold them back on first few days to spread them out,so its best to call on a wed or thu eve to threaten cancelling coz you cant afford it, they will then pull out an "offer"..hope someone who works there still can help confirm this as it was approx 2 years ago.:T

    Hi Karen,

Spookily enough, I've been talking to Sky & NTL over the past couple of days to see which was the best one to go for..

A bit of background - we have Cable Broadband & phone with NTL and a Sky + box, family pack & movies from Sky and I wanted to get everything under one roof as it were.

NTL had sent a letter to me offering 'almost' what I wanted, so I called them and asked what they could do - in the past they have never had anything to compete with the Sky + service (recording live TV & movies etc)... but now they do! NTL are merging with Virgin soon, and can now offer a box called a TVdrive, with the added bonus that it can receive some HD transmissions too!

So the sales bod said he could save me some money by having all 3 services with them - he quoted about £65 pm in total, against about £100 pm that we pay at present splitting the 3 services between Sky & NTL.

Not bad I thought, so I called Sky the next day to ask about the notice period I'd have to give to cancel. Well, the folks at Sky must be on a 'save our customers' drive :) I was offered the TV pack we are on now, with Sky + box still too, Free Broadband & Free phone (eves & w/ends) for a total of £48 !!

(just for information, I'd have to get a BT telephone line connected, for the Broadband & phone - seemed a small price to pay!)

NTL rang back earlier tonight in the hope of signing me up... until I mentioned the Sky offer - the poor bloke nearly choked I think!

He admitted he coudn't get near it, but offered to pass me to a collegue in the customer services dept (read 'don't want to lose a customer' dept) to see what they could do.

After explaining what had gone before to the nice lady, she confirmed the initial price of about £65, upon which I asked if she could get near the Sky offer... and after a bit of work on her part, she came back to me with a price of.... wait for it.... £51 pm for essentially the same package as with Sky :)

And I don't have to go through the hassle of changing to a BT phone line either! Whoo-Hoo!

Sorry for the long, waffly post :embarasse , but I was so taken aback, I felt I had to share it with someone, and yours was the only post I could find that mentioned Sky (apologies if there IS a thread, I'm only a newbie). If a Moderator or Martin himself spots this, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate place.

So I'd say it's DEFINATELY worth a call to them... and if you are in the NTL / Telewest area, a call to them wouldn't go amiss either ;)

    Hope that helps!

Digital TV, Broadband & Phone requirements - around £50 pm saved !
Don't let them Estimate! Gave Powergen a 'real reading' & got £122.16 back that I'd overpaid!
Mortgage Exit fee - £100 received from the Halifax - for just a phone call!
Woolwich - received £3,845 refund of bank charges :)
  • How long is the deal for though?
Even if it is 6 months you still have to pay ful wack after this surely.
  • we decided to reduce our sky bill when we realised exactly how much the sky sports was costing (we really only watched sky sports news - which you can get on the news channels).

....anyway - called one day to ask to cancel, offered nothing really but went away to think about it. this was documented. called a week later to say wanted to cancel (from £37 with sports/6 mixes to £18 with just 4 mixes).

she offered us the 6 mixes plus sky sports for £25 - which i was amazed by - but we are being good and £7 is £7.

    interesting though.....;)

    Well ejones,

I'm presuming it's 12 months - but will confirm when the nice lady calls me back tomorrow to set it all up.

And if it is for 6 months, then I'll be on the phone to Sky again after that to see what they can offer - and I'll be £300 better off :)

Got Sky+ installed without multi room for £50

Problem with many of the offers is that you are tying yourself back into another 12 month contract during which you must have all boxes connected to a phone line (and as per the post the other day on here, Sky are now enforcing this condition with "fines").

It is only the cancellations department themselves that can do most the best offers... the problem of bluffing that you want to cancel is if they cant get you through to the cancellations department then they will just cancel your account so your bluff has been called.
