debt collectors

Hiya

I've just sent off my questionaire to the OR and know it will take several weeks for them to inform my creditors of my bankruptcy. I am getting loads of letters from debt agencies telling me that they will send someone round etc. Should I ring these people myself and tell them my situation do you think ? I don't want anyone turning up here and all the neighbours seeing. Does anyone have any advice ?

Thanks

You'll probably find that the OR will write to your creditors pretty quickly.

I went BR on 5 December 2006 - had my phone interview with the OR on 8th January 2007. By this point they had already written to my creditors to advise them that I'd gone bankrupt - I did already know this as I tried to access my bank account online to get copies of my statements and they'd closed my internet banking.

Its up to you whether you phone them or not - when did you go bankrupt.

I didn't phone any of my creditors - though did tell the ones that phoned me.

    Hiya, thanks for the reply

I went BR on 3rd Jan this year and had my phone interview last Tuesday. The interviewer asked me to send my latest letters with amounts owed etc and she said she'd get the other stuff from my IP.

I would guess that they've already written or are in the process of doing it - you could always phone to double check!

If you decide to phone the debt collectors dont let them try and persuade you to make a payment as some do that. Just literally phone them and say I'm calling to advise that I went BR on 3rd of January - heres my case number, please update your records. Then hang up as soon as possible.

Some try and get some more money out of you as they can scare some people who may not have done as much research as they should.

As alididas says, just give them a quick call, tell them what date you went BR and give them your BR number etc if they ask.

Just give them that information, nothing else. If they carry on, just put the phone down.

I had to do this last year and I have to say, once I'd told them I had gone BR, they were fine with me :)

Yeah I should add that I've had no problem with my creditors hassling me for money, and since going bankrupt and them being advised I've received no further phone calls or letters. I was just warning you as not everyone is quite so lucky - but dont want to scare you at the same time!

  • If they do show up, then you can show them a copy of the order.

I did get a few calls in between the OR informing the creditors. I gave them the details of the court order and the address and telephone no of the OR.

  • Ive still got some god damn awful creatures calling and writing and i was B 11/06 !
  • I had a classic ,nat west sent me a letter last week saying they were going to sent someone round to collect all cards and cheque books from my accounts and charge me £120 ,so i rang them gave them all my bankruptcy details and the nice chap on the phone said there was nothing on the system about it,so i rang my OR and for some reason even thought it was on my petition they had over looked it and not informed nat west ,so it really is worth checking with your OR if certain companies are still contacting you after a period of time .
