Flash - does it do everything?

  • I use star drops for almost everything. I have two spray bottles of it made up, one of which has lavender oil added. They clean really well and would replace almost all of the others. I have a mop thing from Lakeland for the floors which has a removable fluffy cover. I spray dilute stardrops straight on the floor and then swish it over with the mop. Comes up lovely. I change covers on the mop after each room or two and throw them in the washing machine.

I use the lavender spray mostly and use the other one for the car etc. It's the BEST thing to clean the alloy wheels.

Stardrops works out miles cheaper because you only use a teaspoon in a spray bottle and the big bottle of stardrops is less than £1

Hi, don't you use a mop bucket, do you just put the Stardrops directly onto the floor and then mop?

Also do you know if Flash works for stains on clothes and carpets?

    Hi,

I don't think Flash would work in that way, but I imagine you don't use whatever you use for clothes stains for every wash. IIRC you said you used Ace so this one bottle lasts ages I should imagine, so you could still stick with that.
  • No I have ditched the mop and the bucket and good riddance. It used to make me dread cleaning the floors -it was such a carry on and the floors took ages to dry.

I've had a look on Lakeland and my mop isn't there anymore but it's almost the same as the Smart microfiber mop or the e-mop. I have three fluffy covers and one mop. I spray about a third of the floor lightly with the stardrops/lavender spray and then swish it around until it's clean. Then I spay the next third and so on. When the rooms done I might go over the hall or one other room and then I throw the fluffy cover in the wash. It takes five minutes to do a room and the floor dries quickly because it isn't soaked. And because it's so easy I'm more inclined to do it and so the floors never as filthy these days.

Don't have many carpets and wouldn't really use this for that if you see what I mean. For clothes stains I use fairy powder (bio) which came out best in a test somewhere and works great and the really old fashioned fairy liquid washing up liquid directly on stubborn stains as my mum did. That even gets the soles of the white school socks clean and that's saying something

I use my spray bottle of very diluted Stardrops to spray the floor and then use the squeegee mop to mop the wet up, then I drop a bit of old towel on the floor, plank the squeegee head on top of it and dry the floor that way. The towel picks up a surprising amount of extra grot. I don't do the hands and knees scrubbing bit on floors, just on my stairs.

I would be extremely hesitant about using multipurpose cleaners on clothes or carpets. I think this sort of cleaner is only for hard surfaces. The quick way to take out stains from clothes is to either rub bar soap or a drop of liquid laundry detergent into the stain, assuming it's not a delicate fabric. I've got a nasty feeling that Flash etc might react badly with protein fabrics like wool or silk too...you can rot wool by washing it in a very strong solution of dishwashing detergent, for example. I'd have to look at the ingredient list for Flash.

I feel the same about using a mop and bucket which is why I ditched it and started using the floor wipes but they do tend to work out expensive as I need to use more than one at a time. I have tried spraying Flash on the kitchen lino and mopping over it but it tended to make the floor a bit slippery.

If you make up a weak solution with water in a spray bottle it shouldn't make the floor slippery. Never tried it with Flash, as I'm a Stardrops user too, but should be the same principle.

Pleeeease, don't run out and buy a bottle of stardrops now! If you make a vow to use up whatever cleaning stuff you have hanging around, you will probably find they last for a while. Doesn't matter if it says 'kitchen cleaner' on the bottle, or 'bathroom' or whatever. Use it wherever you need it!

After you've used up all your bottles, treat yourself to a bottle of stardrops then! And don't forget to keep all your empty spray bottles, so you can make up your own sprays.

If you were using undiluted Flash or even just the concentration you get in a standard spray bottle, no wonder it was slippy! Most spray on cleaners contain surfactants, which are wetting agents to you and me. They are the carriers which allow the detergent ingredients to get in there and grip the dirt and yup, they're slippy. If you were using neat or very concentrated Flash then you'll have to wipe, rinse, wipe again then dry, plus the residue will almost certainly make the floor attract dust. Dilute it down twice as much as it says on the bottle of concentrate, add a tablespoon of vinegar if you live in a hard water area and try that from a spray bottle.

Towelling will pick up more dirt from a wet floor than a microfibre cloth btw. Microfibre is great for dry dusting but a good old absorbent towel that's not had conditioner added (and who uses conditioner to wash cleaning cloths?) makes a brilliant floor cleaning pad when wrapped round the end of a squeegee or mop. Trt this...mop over with your usual microfibre do-dah, mist the floor again then repeat with a piece of towelling. You'll be astonished.
