Coconut milk/cream shortage?

Saw a sign in Sainsbugs recently to the effect that there is a shortage of coconut milk/cream - and I have noticed some of these products disappearing, or becoming very dear! I cook Thai curries quite often, so use these products quite a lot. I used to buy Maggi instant coconut milk powder from Tesco, but can't get it any more. I then switched to Pataks coconut cream (handy because it came in a packet of 4 small sachets) - now can't find that either! There are still cans of coconut milk to be found, but these are expensive - though I did find some in Poundstretcher for 69p.
Just wondering if anyone has seen the Maggi powder or the Pataks anywhere, or any other make of coconut milk/cream that is reasonble/on offer. I picked up a very cheap bag of dessicated coconut recently - can I use this in curries somehow??
Cheers!

  • My Tesco still stocks plenty of the Maggi and Pataks, maybe try a couple of other branches? You are right though, they are expensive. I did notice today that Tesco have Pride Coconut Milk 400Ml for 78p in their "better than half price" deals, valid until 20 November.

    You can make your own milk with dessicated coconut fairly easily - see this link:

  • The Asian & Chines grocery stores may have it cheaper as they have a slower turnaround than the supermarkets

    If you want to buy online you can try here ;

    ( The coconut cream is expensive on there though!! )

    I didn't know about the dessicated coconut method , may try that myself if prices rise any more!!
  • I tend to always check the ethnic food aisle (sorry if that's not what it's really called) and they usually have reasonably priced coconut milk. I've also seen cans of it pretty cheap in home bargains and b and m and there was a post on here the other day about cheap cans of coconut milk at morrisons.

    Yes, creamed coconut blocks (200gr) are dearer now. Asda seems the cheapest at 63p/200gr. Some Cash and Carrys have also increased their prices for this product. Anybody who has not restocked may not have done?

    Also, another poster on this forum said Morrisons have "Island Sun Coconut Milk" - 39p/400ml on offer.

    Just to say I was in Asda yesterday and the only coconut cream block they had in was pataks and it was £1.20 a pack.

    If you have a B&M they have had coconut milk in recently at 69p.

    Yes, just some Asda's then at 63p?
  • I haven't been able to get fresh coconuts for about 3 weeks at my Tesco's so may be something happened with the crop?
