Moving home what happens with my council tax installments?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, I'm having to move home due to my current landlord has got to sell the house I'm currently renting. I've found a place and will be moving next month but I'm not sure what happens with my council tax. I've just paid the last montly council tax installment (10 months a year) and should be getting the 2 month break but what happens to this when I move? The house I'm moving to is also on a lower band council tax does that make any difference?

If it is within the same council area then you simply inform them and they will advise if there is any rebate or extra to pay - if it is in the same area and band then presumably there wont be.

If you are moving into a different councils juristiction you need to inform both councils. Your old one will give you a rebate for the time not in their area and the new one will bill you for the part year. Make sure you do tell both as I fell for the "dont worry we will tell your old council for you" and they never did and it took a long time to sort out.
