asda call centre 6am call - normal?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this in, but seems nearest to topic, 'home delivery'.
Ok, lastnight I made a home delivery order with a supermarket, as I often do, all well and good, however this time I did notice that I was asked to put in the updated expiry date for my card which I always use. I duly did this. The order went through and the acknowledgement came to my email box. All well and good. Then at 6am today I got a phonecall. It was an indian call centre, on behalf of asda, saying if I did not update my credit card details within the next five minutes I could not have my order.!! Annoyed at being woken at 6am and also not having said credit card to hand I said just cancel the order. He said all I needed to do would be tell him the date of expiry on the card and that would be fine. I said that I had already supplied this, he said I hadn't and it wasn't showing. He then asked me to tell him the exact expiry date, and how the name was written on the card, I did this as by now I was woken up as were my dogs...I went to retrieve it and told him, he said it was not showing, and that either I could go onto my own computer and fill it in (already had done and there had been no problem) so I said no, just cancel the order. He then said well tell me the full number on the card and I will do it for you, he had also asked security questions and I then asked his name too. I said that asda already had the credit card details, He asked me the number the expiry date, but then he asked me the last three digits on the back of the card, so I declined as I am well aware you would never be asked this over the phone, legitimately, I said I was very annoyed at being woken like this and to cancel the order., he then said I now didn't have the option to go into my account and change it myself, contradicting his earlier claim., and that I would not get my order. I hung up.
Does anybody know if this is a scam? Ok he knew certain things, like I was due an order, but then he could have hacked into asda website couldn't he, and the phone number from which he was calling was showing as unavailable? although I realise this happens when it is telesales and call centres.
Anybody had a similar experience? I am about to call into my local store to ask questions in the meantime.
The whole thing is quite bizzare.

I would definately call your local store, all sounds very strange and I'm pretty sure asda wouldn't call u at that time!0

In a round the houses way, he's asked you for all of your card details. I'd say it was a scam for sure.
In any case, when you order, Asda take £1 off of your card straight away to make sure it's valid, so any problems with your card would have shown up then.0 -
Hi
Asda do have an indian call centre but its very unusual for them to call customers direct as its more used for it issues. The main call centre is based in South Africa, I would contact the 0845 number on your account and explain what has happened and see what they say.Wanting to give matched betting a go.:)0 -

Have to agree with Miroslav. Sounds like a scam. They nearly got all the details they would need to commit fraud using your card.0 -
You say you "often" make an order, so someone might have noticed the van outside your house before and just guessed you're due for another one - or it could be like the Sky TV thing, where they just call any number because so many people have Sky they're bound to get someone who does and then hang up on the rest. Calling you early in the morning means you're half asleep and more likely to give out details.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

victoriav - I was just wondering how you got on with this? I think it sounded like a scam for sure but if it wasn't I would be expecting some kind of compensation from Asda for waking me up at 6am! Was your shopping delivered?
As others have said, I think I would cancel my card too.Jane

just to put another spin on this.....
i couple months back i had the same thing happen to me, and i refused to give any details out over the phone.
However as i never received any email from asda saying delivery cancelled, and my online account still showed that the delivery was to be expected, i waited in for it.
The shopping never arrived, so i rang asda myself to query it. The phone call had indeed been from them, and my delivery was cancelled as i failed to supply the correct details.
I of course complained that the phone call i received was 'dodgy' and a company like asda should not conduct themselves in that way.
I got a £25 gift card for my trouble.Started Comping 04/03/12

The OP says you never get asked for the 3 digit security code over the phone but this is not true. The code should be used at anytime when the transaction is done where the purchaser is not in the same place as the seller. This is to show that the purchaser has the card.
We sometimes ring customers for their security number if the payment has not been authorised by the bank and the bank have asked us for it again. If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550
