  • £140 on phone bills???

And I should probably point out that the amount of income you have that you actually earn is somewhat limited. Your expenditure really should be cut to reflect this, otherwise unless you get a better job you are living outside your means

Thanks for comments - my husband is on DLA which may increase as his condition is getting worse. I work 35 hours a week at £10.56 an hour in one job and 15 hours minimum nightshift and twilight hours. Yes I appreciate our phone bills are high but we have 3 contract phones as I am out so much we need to be able to check on husband on son and to do general day to day planning when I am not around.

    Thank you for your comments.

Op - It is difficult to comment on your SOA as you don't give details of how many people are in your family - it is not clear howmany people the shopping is for. Also the CC are all grouped together. By listing them separately, people may suggest that you focus on the one with the highest interest.

It looks like you have money spare each month ... is this really the case? If not a spending diary is a good idea.

The SOA format people normally use is from http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html.

Also on makesenseof cards is a snowball calculator that you put your debts into and it will give you ideas as to how long you will be paying the debts off.

Hi, You haven't really said what the problem is, have you posted for a particular reason? I'm going to assume that you are hoping to get some advice on saving money - comments in blue. The experts will be along shortly

    Family of 4 - 2 adults 2 children, DS 14 & DD 7 (8 at Christmas) 2 dogs.

I work part-time nightshift in Tesco so get 10% discount on everything (I think) apart from fuel. Our CC debts are old debts inherited from my husband's ex-wife who bogged off out of the country (long before I met him - I might add!!!)

I also work 35 hours a week full-time during the day as an Administrator

Home phone includes fibre optic broadband and inclusive anytime calls. Our mobile phone contracts are for son, husband and myself. As I work so much I need to be able to make various arrangements and my husband's depression means he does not answer mobiles or house phone if he does not recognise the number or been pre-warned. My son also has a muscular condition which means he may need collected from school at any time.

We have the full sky package at half price after following advice on here which keeps husband happy re football.

Monthly shopping bill includes everything including dog food, toiletries and cleaning supplies. I know it can be less but my problem is time - my husband is unable to stand for long periods of time so even though he is a good cook preparing dinner is now nearly beyond him. Two children are getting good at filling in the gaps between meal times and although some/many people would disagree with me I believe they should be aware if things are not going well so they can come up with suggestions re school lunches and feel included.

    Sorry about being long winded.

No we do not have life insurance- we should.

    Thank you

Just noticed the comments on holiday - we drive abroad each year to stay with friends and believe it or not we do camp. This is a maximum amount and is sometimes less - I just panic sometimes

£200 per month for a camping holiday:eek: This needs to be addressed, it is an awful lot of money.

You work full time and then nightshift in Tesco and have a husband with a disability and two children, gosh, you are superwoman, you have alot on your plate, you deserve a holiday, but just not at £200 per month...sorry.

I guess you are correct at that one.....I tend to round up figures and hope that £200 a month will cover ferries, petrol, overnight accommodation, boarding for dogs while we are away and unforeseen eventualities. We camped this year abroad for the first time and enjoyed it esp the tropical thunderstorm at 2am - wow light show was brilliant - rain bouncing off tent - not so good. LOL

My reason for posting SOA is to try and get a handle on things here - there is a fair chance we will have to pay a substantial tax bill which has come to light this past week and we need to cut corners where possible.

    Thanks for your help

  • Wow you have a tough life! I feel really mean now - but unfortunately the only way to cut costs is to not spend money. If you go without this years holiday and cut back or stop the social spending then you'll make quite a big difference in the region of £850 per month comprising of
Holidays £200 give it a miss this year,
Bank Account £13 swap to a free one,
Clothes £90 wear what you've got this next year,
Knock a £100 of food bill and include packed lunches in your shop £109
Shopping for fun £80, Drinking and Eating out £140,
Christmas drop £50 per month for next year - cut the amount of presents you buy.
Car maintenance - do you really spend over £800 per year on repairing the car? Might be better to get a different one, I'd think £20 pcm should be a reasonable amount if you have a reliable car.

The following cuts don't even take into consideration the phone bills - I don't know what fibre optic broadband is but it still seems really expensive plus if you were all to go on the same network you could get free calls between all of you. We did this for our sons, daughter and myself and the dearest contract was £15 - you can even get it on PAYG I think.

Anyway I hope this has at least given you pause for thought, I really admire your tenacity but you only have this one life and you are spending yours working ridiculous hours when your family are all at home.

    Good luck and best wishes

You haven't said how much you owe on your cc but this would clear over £10,000 - you could probably give up your second job then and spend more quality (if more frugal) time with your family.

Hi - I would maybe approach things from a slightly different direction.
First I would look at the essentials - eg electric, home phone and see if I could get more/better services (or at least the same) but for less. I don't know how many mobiles you've got - are you all making the best use of your allowances? can you all go on the same network and get free network to network minutes? can someone get the other person to phone back if one has more minutes than the other? can texts be utilised or emails in some circumstances?
Electric - are you on the correct tariff? are you with a cheap/decent company? are you wasting electric - ie leaving lights on when not needed, leaving things on overnight on standby etc? I appreciate that it will be higher than the average due to your living situation but you should hopefully be able to make some savings. Are you eleigble for a disability tariff due to your husbands condition etc?
Basically go through all your essentials and see what you can do.
You then have what's left - you need to work out what you need/want to put towards the debts each month and then decide what's important to you depending on the figures - perhaps you can have drinks at home or a holiday but not both - you need to decide as a family where your priorities lie? perhaps you can save more on bills but cut your hours at work to spend more time with the family and perhaps take a bit longer to pay off the debts? Or perhaps you want to go all out and make more sacrifices this year to be debt free sooner? Perhaps some luxuries are more important than others to you?
Only you know what will work for your family - it's a question of balance.
    Best of Luck
