Got job but now due to headcount I might not have one!

I have been through 4-5 rounds and have been whittled down from 126ppl to the last 2 candidates for 2 jobs.

Good news, I have a job

Bad news, it's dependant on the head office releasing this money to fund both positions as they are having a recruitment freeze at the moment.

So if it's worst case scenario, what should I do? What questions do I ask? I don't want to go through the long recruitment process again, it's been over 2 months since I sent my application in.

Mayling, I don't believe there's a lot you can do. They will either pull the plug or they won't. If they do, there's not a lot you can do about it and you will have to go through the rigmarole of applying for a new job from scratch. Really bad organisation on their part but that can happen particularly in big multinationals where there's a big chain of command. All you can do is try not to stress, you've obviously got skills that are in demand, and a good interview technique to get this far. If you really wanted to play hard ball you could go back and say that you are at final stage interview with another organisation and what would happen in the event that company 2 offered as you really want to work for them, etc - depends how much you want to go down that route. It might not make any difference sounds like the people dealing with you are quite far removed from the decision makers who can pull the plug, so they will prob not be able to influence that decision. Athough if they think there's a chance they could lose you, it may encourage them to try and speed it up a little.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. I don't like that platitude too much, but it seems to me that as you have won a job, your confidence should be high and you are in a good position to press on some more and land another. Do you really want to work for an outfit which recruits people but has no idea whether it can actually take them on?

Happened to me. Got a call to say I was successful at interview but the funding had been withdrawn. So no job for me. Nothing you can do except politely say thank you very much just in case you meet them again.

I wouldn't be bothered if it was another company but I do really want to work for this company. They do heavily invest in their people and develop them. Apparently its not unheard of in big companies like these.

If you dont get it, you could look at it as why would you want to be working for a company who is having a recruitment freeze? Thats not really a good sign.

Lots of companies are having recruitment freezes at the moment. Did you not hear of the recession?

The recruitment freeze is not due to the poor climate but headcount. My Sister who has worked for an international firm for 20 years has seen this many a time and it's not unusual. Obviously they had the budget to recruit at the time, the decision about withdrawing it is out of the hands of the HR dept I have been dealing with. Also why would they waste money time and energy into recruiting which has taken over 2 months to complete if they knew what was going to happen? Think the people I have been dealing with are equally frustrated but not more so than I.

In my case the government withdrew money from the NHS between advertising the job and the interviews. It was actually in the papers the day before my interview that so much money had gone from the hospital that I was hoping to work at and so many jobs would be lost.. mine was one of them.
