Moving to Dundee, some advice please :)

Options
Hello everyone :)

I have been offered a job in Dundee and it looks like I'll be moving there in the middle of December. I've been looking at flat rentals and flat shares all weekend, I'm thinking I would like to live in the centre of town or in the west end area. I have only visited the place once (for the interview) and don't know anyone who lives there. I could really do with some advice on things like areas to avoid/good areas and any advice on Dundee in general.

Any help would be much appreciated either on the thread or you are welcome to pm me.

Thanks

My son is a student in Dundee and stays in the city centre. He loves Dundee but I don't think he ventures far from the town. There are a number of regulars on this board who are from Dundee hopefully they will be along to help!

Depending which area you are going to work in there are many places which are lovely. West end is quite student orientated, up the Perth road is too, as its near the university. Monifieth, Broughty Ferry and Panmurefield are the places many who have a higher income stay in, but they are more to the east. Try to avoid Fintry, Douglas and Mid Craigie, these are areas which are not so desirable. I am not sure about the other estates.
Hope you enjoy your move. Dundee is a city that is up and coming again, with the new Victoria and Albert Museum and a lot of investment. There is quite a good mixture of nightlife, clubs, Cinemas, City Hall which has quite a few concerts etc, gyms, restaraunts etc. Shopping wise you have many different types of shop from small independents to the large national retailers.

There are many small villages and towns around Dundee, where rentals may be cheaper for instance Invergowrie, Newtyle, LOngforgan, Errol are to name a few.
good luck with your new job and move. I am sure someone will be along shortly to give you more info!

  • Thanks folks, I'll be working close to the McManus Art Gallery so ideally I'd like to live within walking distance initially. The plan is to get a 6 month lease, get to know the area and then make a more permanent move after that.
  • Does anyone have any thoughts on the Stobswell area of Dundee? I've seen a few really nice flats around there but I also saw some newspaper articles from over a year ago talking about young people causing disturbances in the area.

I live in the Stobswell area, some streets are great some not so great. Where I live, it can be noisy with drunks, druggies etc in the street but I've never had any ACTUAL problems with anyone.

BTW I also know someone who works in the museum side of McManus.
