in Cutting tax
I am currently on the wrong tax code.......
I phoned HMRC, all they told me to do was to send them my P45 1A.
I just find it odd that they need my P45 Part 1A when surely they have my all my tax details as they are the people who tax me. They would have received Part 1 from my previous employer.
Does anyone know if they do actually need this form, or did I speak to some incompetent customer service person on the phone?
Surely they can just change my tax code on their system and thats it.
Thanks for your help....

What tax code are you on?I phoned HMRC, all they told me to do was to send them my P45 1A.
Why didn't you give your P45 to your new employer? Did you complete a P46 instead?I just find it odd that they need my P45 Part 1A when surely they have my all my tax details as they are the people who tax me. They would have received Part 1 from my previous employer.
Depends when you left. HMRC may not have received the info as yet.Surely they can just change my tax code on their system and thats it.

If they have the info they will do just that. If they haven't got it yet they can't.0 -
I don't have a P45 in front of me to work out which part is which, but if you're in a new job now, did you give your new employer the part you were supposed to? If you did, I'm not sure how you ended up on the wrong tax code unless your current employer didn't do what they should have done.I am currently on the wrong tax code.......

I think they really need this form. Or some form. BecauseDoes anyone know if they do actually need this form, or did I speak to some incompetent customer service person on the phone?
On the strength of a phone call? I do hope not. There needs to be a paper trail.Surely they can just change my tax code on their system and thats it.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
What tax code are you on?
747LM, the M should not be there.
Why didn't you give your P45 to your new employer? Did you complete a P46 instead?
I did, I gave them parts 2 and 3 (the parts they are supposed to keep)
I keep Part 1A (the part that HMRC have requested in order to amend my tax code).
Depends when you left. HMRC may not have received the info as yet.
Yes they should have received Part 1, which is the part that would have been sent to them by my previous employer. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Yes my new employer has the parts they are supposed to, I have the part I am supposed to, and HMRC should have the part they are supposed to have.
I ended up on the wrong tax code because the part the new employer needed to fill out already had a cross in the 'week' / 'month' box is wrong.

What was the tax code on the P45? Was it also 747L M1?Yes they should have received Part 1, which is the part that would have been sent to them by my previous employer.
Assuming it has got there yet. You haven't said when you left.
Your new employer should also have sent Part 3 to HMRC. When did you give them the P45?0 -

The tax code on the P45 is 747LM
As I said it should be 747L
I left my previous job 3 months ago, gave my P45 to my new employer 2 months ago. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I know it should be. However as the P45 had the tax code of 747L M1, the new employer had to operate that code.I left my previous job 3 months ago, gave my P45 to my new employer 2 months ago.
Should be plenty of time for HMRC to have received it then.
I would phone up again and see if it can be changed over the phone. If they still insist on the P45 being sent then just do so.0 -

HMRC don't deduct tax from you, your employer collects tax based on information provided by you either by way of a P45 parts 2 and 3 or a P46. The employer then submits the P45 part 3 or P46 to HMRC and continues to act on the information you gave them until HMRC processes the P45/P46. When HMRC act on that information they then issue a revised code to the employer. That's normally how HMRC find out when you change job.
Your previous employer in submitting the P45 part 1 only tells HMRC you've left their employment but not where you've moved on to.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
