Autograph by M&S suits for men - good?

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has had any recent experience with the newly face-lifted suits from the Autograph range at M&S?

Their styles and cut seem very contemporary from their website and pondering making a trip to see them in person.

I'm in the market for a business/formal suit, hence the forum choice.

Regards,

Z

  • I have one that I wear to work, it's my favourite! I have another M&S suit as well which is their 'normal' fit and compared to that it's a better fit, but I don't know enough about suits to know exactly what it is that's different.

I've always had M&S suits and my current work one is an Autograph one.

I did find that looking online was a lot different in person. The one I originally liked I actually hated when I saw it, but found another style I liked.

People have been buying suits from M&S for years - the Autograph range is just one of a number they sell.

I suggest you visit a larger store and try some from each of the ranges and see what suits your shape best. Some are a "fashion" fit whilst others are more traditional.

When choosing, consider the style - will it be in keeping with your position? Shiny, tight suits are great in some jobs but probably frowned upon if you work for a traditional law firm or if you aren't super fit.

Always buy at least two pairs of trousers to one jacket as you sit in your trousers more than you wear your jacket and so it helps for move even wear and they last longer as a result.

I've got an M&S autograph suit and I think it's great; It fits well and does what it is supposed to at a pretty reasonable price. I have to agree with Lokolo about seeing it in person before making decisions though, never the same as online.

M&S probably sell more suits to middle management than any other supplier in the country, so it will be perfectly decent for most work situations. When you're a director and can afford a bespoke suit, then the time is right for an upgrade ;-)

+1, it's probably close to the 'nobody got fired for buying IBM' line... Well worth the (fairly minimal) investment over the mega-cheap suits that frankly look as cheap as they are.

Avoiding the polyester option and stocking up during sales/offer periods are both decent plans ;)

Think there are a few other companies that fit between M&S and a true bespoke suit!

M&S ones are fine, they look good for the money and if like me your waist and chest don't fit the normal ratio it is good that you buy the trousers and jacket separately. That said, I don´t find the trousers the most hard wearing things out there.

Agree with the above, they look the part but aren't very durable. Unless you have a good suit rotation it will degrade quite rapidly.
Have you heard of Slaters menswear? They are in most towns and do reasaonable priced suits.

I chose M&S as I believe some of their suits come in size 34.

If anyone can recommend any other retailer who does quality, contemporary suits for business attire, I'd be happy to listen. Slaters doesn't unfortunately :(.
