Dying over previously dyed hair. Yes or no?

I used to get my hair dyed in the local salon (at £70 a shot every five weeks) I simply can't afford to now, and haven't done for some months. It used to be done in something like four different shades, in foils. I have never dyed my hair myself in my life, and only started salon dying it about 5years ago. (rather wish I hadn't now!)
Now I have about three inches of regrowth, and about five inches of very blonde rather frizzy hair of the original dyed colour.
I can get some of it cut off, but I really really don't want to go short short as I don't suit it at all. Makes me look far too severe.
Can I get a home dying kit and do it myself? Or would it come out two different shades because of the two different starting colours.
Natural colour is mousy blonde, dyed colour is bright blonde. (I know I know, but it gave me a lift at the time!)
All help and advice appreciated! Even if it's just to say "Get thee to a salon!"

I went from blonde to brunette via odd lilac colour and dyed over colour hair, do strand test first see how it turns out then go for it, you may have to apply full head a couple times again over period of time to get it even or looking a way you are happy with it, but it will save a small fortune in a year.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

You can but the previously dyed hair may take the colour differently especially if it bleached or in poor condition.
What about one last trip to the salon to have it all dyed back to the original colour and then once it is sorted out you can take it from there yourself?0 -
Good point Amanita. Thank you! Yes, two different colours is exactly what I'm afraid of happening.0

Do you have a local college or training salon you could get it done at? I know one I go to some times does colour correction, they also do very nice highlights and it is way cheaper. A haircut is less than a tenner and highlights less than £20. Solid dying is cheaper.Saving for a deposit. £5440 of £11000 saved so far:j0

Thanks easilydistracted and mum2one, I've just googled it on your advice and yes, there are two within twenty miles of here, and they have training salons attached. Thank you both!0
