Northern Rock Incompetence

I've recently applied for a purchase mortgage with Northern Rock. They've had my application for 10 weeks. It seems to me that they are now trying to catch me out - trying to find a reason not to send me an offer.

They have shown incompetence at every stage - asking for more information when they already have the details if they bothered to look at my application. They told my solicitor that they were not on the panel when they where and when my solicitor re-applied just to speed things up NR still said they had no contact from my solicitor, even though my solicitor had two e-mailed confirmations from NR that they were now on the panel.

When i ring NR i'm told that they have all the information they need to send me an offer and i should have same within 72 hours. Then, at the 72nd hour they find another question to ask (which they already know the answer to), as if they're buying themselves more time.

Does anyone know if NR are doing this for a purpose? Are they just buying time because they can't meet their targets? Does anyone think I have a right to complain and seek recompense for the unneccessary anxiety they're causing? What if i lose the house i'm trying to purchase because of their delays?

Why don't you just apply with someone else if you're not happy?

  • Meeper,

They've already had a product fee and valuation fee off me and the interest rates have gone up since the deal i applied for. Plus, surely their incompetence should be addressed, if i have a point...?
  • I'm in the process of getting a mortgage with Northern Rock as a first time buyer and it's been full-on plain sailing - application stage to offer stage in only 5 weeks and moving in in a few more weeks!! Is it definitely norther rock who are giving you the grief or is it more the fault of external parties? Are you in a complicated chain?
  • Hi, You are not on your own. The buyer of our home is using northern rock and we are at the end of week nine and he is still waiting for his offer. They also have said that his solicitors are not approved and they have had to re-apply.

It's like their stalling but tbh the amount he is borrowing is so small don't know what the hold up is.

Sorry I cant help but I can sympathise. Looks like for now we just have to wait a little longer.

    Good luck!
  • also having a nightmare with Northern Rock.

Took ages to do valuation (still isnt done) - seller is getting worried thinking we are not interested now.

Now they have just come back asking for the last 2 years P60s (they only asked for the last one). I know I dont have the one from 2 years ago and the wife definitely wont have. My last mortgage only needed last 3 months pay slips

Sadly they are not one of the most efficient lenders, unless their rate is much better, or they will lend when others won't I will always avoid them now, which is a shame, as they used to be half-decent.

I suspect the op's application has slipped through the net somewhere, and unfortunately has fallen "off the system" I would suggest a formal complaint to try to help identify the problem, hopefully then it can be sorted.

  • Just an update. My financial advisor has given NR a rocket and agrees we should complain. They now say they have everything they need and my offer is on its way. Again. Let's see.

If you used an adviser, I'd suggest that he's the one needing the rocket.

Agreed 100%. To allow an application to drag on for 10 weeks is unbelievable.

  • Hi Glynnpanzee,

Maybe they are trying to meet targets. Funny that like you after 9 long weeks today our buyer received their offer from NR and surprise surprise its the 1st of the month. Hopefully you will receive yours in the next day or so.
