Not paid total hours worked

I worked a total of 56.75 hours last week, 51 @ my normal hourly rate and 5.75 @ time & 1/2. My payslip shows 51 @ normal and -5.75 hours @ time & 1/2 which = 8.625 hours @ normal rate. As the company has deducted this, it seems they are only paying me 51 - 8.625 =42.375 hours. I do not believe this to be legal.

Someone, probably in payroll itself, put a minus in error. Notify your manager and ask for it to be corrected (either by reissuing this weeks payslip or by putting through 11.5 hours @ T+1/2 next week).
Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, give them a chance to correct it before questioning legalities!Kate short for Bob.

Not so much can they, they have unfortunately.
I doubt you will get anywhere with threatening legal action unless you give them the chance to put it right first.
Look at it this way, if you aren't desperate for the money, you could approach your manager and point out the error but say you are prepared to wait for it to be corrected.
This way you appear to be a reasonable and fair employee and get in everyones good graces!Kate short for Bob.

Legally they can't make a deduction (defined as deducting it and keeping it, never to hand it over), legally they can make a mistake and correct it at the first reasonable opportunity which on weekly pay would probably be next weeks pay packet unless they can sort it out sooner. Strange as it may sound payroll clerks are also human and do occasionally make the odd error - as long as they sort it then its not worth getting all "legalistic" over.Adventure before Dementia!0

it's perfectly legal to make a mistake when calculating wages.0 -
You need to ask them why they made the deduction. And the answer will probably be "A mistake". They do happen, the people in payroll / HR are only human after-all, just like the rest of us.
Or do you have reason to suspect a problem and are trying to get all your ducks in a row? If so then it might be easier to just say what's on your mind. I only ask because you jumped straight in with the "is it legal" stuff. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0
