Debt repayment wasn't deposited and now debt's been sold- what to do?

Dear all,
First time user, so forgive me if I make any mistakes/sound confusing!
In short, I've been repaying a debt which was owed to Barclaycard for a number of years now. A repayment plan was agreed on due my financial situation, and I have maintained regular payments of £50 for a number of years with no hassle.
Whilst attempting to repay this month's fee, I gave this payment through depositing the money in a deposit machine as it was overdue by a few days and I wanted to get it out of the way (the one's which you receive a slip for having paid into the envelope), which has since led to great difficulty. The payment wasn't received. At the time when I was using deposit machine, a lady working in the bank assisted me and filled the envelope in for me. However, she labelled the envelope "BILLS", failing to put the account details/sort code on the envelope. At the time, I thought this would have made little difference. Low and behold, I was sent a letter from the bank chasing up this payment. I returned to the bank the following working day, who barely helped and told me to get on the phone to the Recoveries team. My English is really poor (I have a friend translating and typing this for me) and they only agreed to continue the repayments of £50 and did not manage to explain where my £50 had gone.
I have today received a letter stating that my debt has been sold to Cabot Finance, which is unbelievably frustrating as my recent payment of £50 has basically disappeared. I'd really appreciate some advice right now, because I'm new to this and am completely uncertain of the actions I should take.
Thank you for reading - apologies about the length!

It was overdue by a few days and as far as the lender is concerned the payment has still not been made, therefore you have not kept the the agreement you made. Presumably when you deposited the funds in the automated teller you included the payment slip from the bottom of the statement, so they must be able to identify your payment in branch. Just putting the account details/sort code on the envelope itself is not adequate information for them to be able to process the funds so the lack of this information wouldn't have made any difference.0

Thanks for your reply.
I correct my original post: Payment was in actual fact in advance of the due date (translation error on my friend's part)! I included payments for two different accounts in the same envelope. Both payment slips were indeed included in these envelopes. However, for the other payment, I have received a statement validating the payment with an updated outstanding balance. For this account, however, payment has not been received. Both were paid on the same date.
This seems to indicate an error during the processing stages of the deposit. Could I do anything about this?
Thank you for your help in advance.0 -
Can no one help? I'm currently reading frightening stories of Cabot Financial and their high interest rates and ridiculous service. Any advice would be much appreciated!!0
