Got offered Argos job anyone know what happens next?

Have been asked to come to an induction next Thursday.

Manager caught me at an inopportune time so forgot to ask what happens in terms of contract? Anyone know if they will send it in advance or will they expect me to sign it at induction? Not keen to sign at induction as prefer to have a proper read!

Any other info greatly appreciated!

Im sure you could ask to take it home to read and sign and bring it back. I cant think there will be anything in the contract untoward.
  • You'll get all the paperwork as part of your induction. The induction includes watching instructional videos and completing multi-choice test on a computer. If it is a Xmas temporary contract (assuming that all stores operate in the same way) then it is all standard stuff - I haven't seen anything controversial.

Your contract will be for X hours a week so you will be guaranteed X hours until the end of your fixed term contract. Hopefully there will be more nearer Xmas but everything in retail is quiet so don't bank on them.

My contract was for 9 hours but I know some of the warehouse stock temps were on as little as 3. When I've had an extra shift on the rota, it's been cancelled - sometimes this can be as late as the morning before an afternoon shift but usually get more notice than this. I believe it is all dependant on the amount of sales during the start of the week.

Contract contains the usual things such as entitlement to breaks and which ones are paid etc., behaviour on social networking sites, rules handling money, agreeing to searches and to videoing through the mystery shopping, grievance procedures etc.

You are expected to be available for the bank holidays around Xmas/New Year although past experience suggests that most of this can be negotiated - teenagers are usually keen to work as bank holidays are overtime payments - but you do have to agree to work if they want you to.

We've only been getting hours in 3 hour slots so that there is no breaks (over 4 hours gives a 15 min paid break) - my guess is it is a cost cutting measure.

    Hope that helps

Thanks full-time-mum. Does the contract say when the hours are?

I was quite specific as to when I was available at interview.

No - you will have to negotiate that with your manager.
In my experience, flexible means you have to be flexible to fit their requirements and not the other way around. Having said that, I've had no problems with getting shifts to fit around hospital appointments.

My main gripe would be that the hours for next week aren't often available until Friday night which means you don't know if you are working Sunday until two days before. This makes childcare arrangements a little difficult and leaves little time to organise swapping of shifts if there are problems.

I think that you will just have to play it by ear and see how it goes. I try and be as flexible as possible so that I can be more assertive when it really matters.

OH gets a bit cross as he says that we can't plan anything just to get 9 hours NMW but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks think you are right!

Just worried that will get given shifts can't do even after telling them could only commit to working whilst kids at school (would cost me to work if I had to get childcare apart from hubby) but may be available at other times.

Guess will have to see how it goes like you say. And if worse comes to worse hand in notice. Hopefully not too long a notice period!

    Thanks again.

    Thanks for asking!

Am enjoying it so far. The people are nice. Loving the fact that when I am doing it and ask customers to bear with me because I am new they say we all have to start somewhere! Am taking that to mean I look young - please don't disillusion me!

    Thanks again for asking!
